Anyone reload Herter’s hulls using Longshot powder and Remington SP16 wads? Any input will be greatly appreciated. |

He he he
I went WAY BACK in my mind on this one
Not the OLD Herter's but the NEW Herter's is what you are aaking about !!
Same hull as the Cheddite.
Use that data.
This is as close as I could come !!

Watch out for bloopers with that combo, powder migration with longshot is a real problem. I loaded some longshot with the SP16 wad a few years ago and after getting bloopers on a pheasant hunt had to take them apart. The combo works well in the Remington hulls though. I use the Cheddite 1632 wad (available from Grafs) with longshot in the Cheddite hulls. Some folks use a seperate card wad or Tyvex disc under the SP16 in straight wall hulls, but I'm not aware of any pressure data with that recipe. |

Ummm. Don't do it. The SP16 is possibly the smallest diameter wad, the Herter's the largest diameter hull, and Longshot leaks like water. The powder will leak around the wad seal badly. I use Claybuster WAA 16 type wads and they have the same problem but the powder cup is much deeper that the Rem wad so I just roll the seal edge with the rim of a 10 ga. hull and pre-flare it (tremendously) so it will spread out wide enough to seal. I can't do that with SP16's since there is not enough skirt around the powder cup.
In your case the two easiest things to do are either buy some european wads like SG16 etc. or use a powder like 800-X that leaks past nothing. I have been very happy with 800-X in my 1 oz. loads. It works well in the 1 1/8, but unfortunately my patterns are indeed a little better at 50 yards with Longshot, thus my willingness to pre flare all those WAA wads (much work). |

Hi, here's the 16ga load I use for Sharpies and Ringnecks. This one has worked very well for me. Patterns good (in the guns I use).
Herters (Cheddite) 2 3/4"
22grs Longshot
SG16 Wad
209 Cheddite Primer
1 1/8oz of shot
7000psi
1200fps
I also use an Overshot card, does give me better crimps. The SG16 is a 7/8 to 1oz wad, but I've never had any problems with flyers or "blown" patterns with the additional 1/8oz of shot.
Never had any powder migration either.
I use this load in all my 16ga guns, including 2 1/2" chambered guns. It's worked well for me.
Best of luck!

I expand the claybuster pver the powder cup very easily. No powder migration. I shoot all the trap games ,piece shoot. Piece protextion, bushwackers and so on. Long yardage on shootoffs. I stay with 1oz on all targets except pv protection
I use 3/4 oz for first shot on that game so my partner has some pieces tp shoot at. On bushwackers you want to smoke the bird to not leave anything for others to shoot at. I have setteled on 20/28 powder after several years of trying most powders for the 16. I have never neen hadicaped shooting against the 12. |
