Have a question for the SXS fans here.
I have been wanting a 16 SXS for some time. I do not want to sink big $ into a high end gun until I know if I am going to like a SXS or not.
Ran into a 16 ga gun marked Geco on the barrels. Did some research and found out a lot of the guns they sold were Simson or Sauer produced guns.
Looking at this one I don’t know who made it and it may well be a guild gun.
Was looking at proofs and such and found a mark that is two overlapping S’s on barrel flats under the left barrel along with many other marks.
It is stamped 2 3/4 shells
It is a prewar mfg date of 5/29.
Gun is a box lock, double trigger, raised rib, 27.5” barrels, splinter forend with a release latch. Release lever is just slightly right of center and locks up very tightly. Bluing is still very strong on the barrels. I would estimate low 90’s for %. The case coloring is gone from the receiver but there is no pitting. Trigger guard is steel not horn. All screws are clean and not boogered.
I can buy the gun for $850.00.
Thoughts on value? It fits very well and feels much better than my SKB 200E in 20 gauge that I recently picked up. I am not overly fond of the SKB because it is pretty whippy feeling.

OK, my two cents.

If the gun is local.
It is a used gun, see if the seller will allow you to shoot it with factory 16 gauge ammo. That way you will know if it fits and if you like it.

Mike

p.s. I have a Belgium GECO and like mine

I have a german GECO, form 10/36.

Mine is a JP Sauer, marked with the double S that you describe. My gun has 2 pin style cocking indicators, and is an "ejector" and is about 70% engraved and very very nicely done at that.

I will tell you this, I would be hard pressed to find a better SxS, especially from those years. My personal gun is impeccably done. Its typical German perfection.

I paid more than 850.00, and I've never regretted it.

You wont find anything like it for 850.00.

A Merkel is junk compared to my JP Sauer...and I really like Merkels

I doubt there’s a better value on the planet.

I started out with a CZ Ringneck in 16. The triggers were terrible even after I had a gunsmith work on them. When the Sharptails came out, I bought one in 28 gauge and loved it, but they were not offering a Sharptail in 16 at the time. I wended up buying a Rizzini FAIR Iside in 16 and II am happy with it, but then they came out with the Sharttail in 16 for a whole lot less money. If you go new, consider one of those too.

Get it. My first 16 sxs was a $600 Belgian guild gun and it is nowhere near the quality of that Geco. I shot a triple on chukars with it the first year, fell in love with the shallow, smaller receiver (as opposed to the deep and heavy 12ga o/u I was shooting) and instinctive handling, and I've never looked back.

Like Dannypratt, I have a JP Sauer ,from '37. Mine has a cheekpiece, which I was wary of, but its become one of my favorite field guns. Sounds like you've found a nice one. Hope you get it and post some pics if you do.

Well I done did it!
Now the proud owner of a Geco / Sauer & Sohn 16 gauge.
This is the second oldest gun I have ever owned.
Very much looking forward to shooting this gun.
Barrels were misidentified by the seller. They are actually 28 3/4” long.
This is a good thing because I learned with my 26” SKB 200E, short barrels and SXS are not a good mix for me. The SKB swings like a willow switch and I really have to think to shoot it well. Not a good thing.
This gun is very well balanced in my hands and feels much smoother. Dare I say it feels better than my Superposed 20?
I am going to have to go through a little learning curve as I have never shot a double trigger gun before.
Have to go to the ranch we manage this weekend and work, but hope the weather will allow some shooting of Eurasian Collared doves and maybe some barn ducks.
I will get some pictures next week. I will have to find a photo hosting site as I am not using one now and I understand that is the only way to post them here.
Thanks for all the input and help.

Good Job on getting that gun ! I hope you shoot it well. sounds like a winner to me - I do like the longer barrels. For the money, you can't go wrong. get some 16 ga. snapcaps and practice with using the two triggers and then practice selecting the back trigger first. It helps me to move my hand a little on a pistol grip stock when going from the front trigger to the back one.d enjoy !

Good for you! Great advice from Thunderstick on practicing with the double triggers. Don't do like I did when I was 13 and got my first side by side and put a finger on each trigger Embarassed At least I only did it once.

Good gun, you'll like it. The double trigger thing takes a little getting used to but it happens easily and will become second nature soon enough.

For hosting photos I have been happy with jpgbox.
