Hi all, I was hoping to ask an opinion from those with long memories.
I have 52 brand new Smith and Wesson 16 ga. plastic with fibre base wad hulls.
I know that they used Fiocci hulls for some loads, but not sure if the 16's are the
same. I'd like to load these with 1 oz. of lead shot. If someone has load data it
would be great if they shared. If not this is what I was thinking of trying.
21.0 gr of Unique
Win 209
sp16
Seems like a good load to start with.
Also, I was going to use a 6 fold crimp since it may work better with new hulls.
Any thoughts? |

drummergunner -- Are those the dark blue hulls with chrome bases and chrome colored primers? I had 500 of those, new and un-fired. Still have them, and some have been fired. I also have trimmed some to 2 9/16 and pie crimped them. They make a beautiful load -- they crimp really nice for a hull with no previous crimp memory. I am half a continent away from my reloading log now, but I recall I loaded them like Federals. The basewad is a rolled paper thing just like a Federal, and the hull material is like older Federal plastic hulls -- thicker than today's Euro hulls (Fiocchi, Rio, Martignoini, Cheddite, etc). If I recall correctly, they had just a tad more capacity than a Federal. Even though mine are old (my father picked them up somehow, maybe 40 years ago), they seem to be in good shape, and the primers go bang -- never had a dud. In another 3 or 4 weeks I should be able to look up the loads I used in them. I believe I used Cheddite and/or Gualandi wads. |

Thanks for the replies. You describe them perfectly except they are brand new with no primers MaximumSmoke. I too thought to use Federal data, but posted slightly lighter powder charge to be conservative. Won't be trimming them as they will be used in a pair of Ithaca m37's. As for wads, All I have are sp16's. I'll keep my eyes open for others, but selection in Canada can be spotty. Whenever you get the chance, your data would be appreciated. I think I picked these up 20 years ago for $2.00. Some may say don't bother with them, but that's not how I roll. |
