Hi all, here's the article I spoke of in a previous thread. My son helped me get this uploaded ...thanks Jim! Anyway, very informative and breaks a lot of misconceptions on this subject. Sorry for the small print, hope you either can enlarge it or get a magnifying glass!

Best,

Greg

one of the guys at my 1st GC , had done some writing and investigative work for DGJ and with Mr Bell . He has always stated what this article confirms and we've (from the GC) always believed this to be true . no worries at lighter loads , and I've always kidded him about bringing his fave 20K double to the club and shooting some 3'' thru it . His reply was always "no worries !!)

Well, there you have it. Quantitative results. I like what he says at the end about souped up ballistics.

I sure appreciate the work Sherman Bell did on shotgun loads! In particular, things researched like the short chamber issue and also shooting damascus guns and loads for damascus! I believe he wrote thirteen articles for Double Gun Journal beginning about 1999 or 2000. Should be required reading for vintage gun owners and shooters. Thank you Sherman!

Great article but I have to wonder that since it was all done about 12ga, would the results have been different/amplified as you go down in gauge size?

I've posed that question on forums in the past. There's really no consensus on the answer but I've seen the 500psi increase thrown about enough to come to the conclusion that a lot of folks accept it as gospel for all gauges. Aside from a few low psi 12ga loads, I shoot ammo appropriate to the chamber of the gun in hand.

As well, I wonder about the legality of posting a scanned copy of the article in it's entirety on an open forum. It would be a shame for the OP or this site to run in to copyright issues.
