Came across this gun a few days ago. I’m stymied buy the cut outs on the top of the breech face. I’ve never seen this before on an action. Side clips yes, but not this rounded cut out on top of the action. The line engraving backs off the cur outs, so I’m assuming they are original to the gun. Any thoughts?

Looks like the receiver has been torched. Almost no color on the flats. Look at pics #15 and #25 to see the receiver and the cut outs.

Not interested in buying this gun, for a variety of reasons, but am interested in some plausible explanation for the semi-circular areas on the top of the breech face...

Thanks

Yes. Looks like minor depressions to make sliding the shells in easier.

Maybe a passive loaded chamber indicator?

I think this is the most likely answer.

I thought about the loaded chamber indicator idea, but the markings from the shell head on the breech face doesn’t bare that out.

Thanks guys...

To me it just looks like something that was done to add a little styling flair to blend the lines of the receiver face with the lines of the rib intersection. Pure aesthetics.
