I recall some mention of fly fishing and golden trout a few weeks ago. I am finally back home from a very trying "vacation" in rather congested country. It's time to start thinking about leaders, tippets, and the like. As such, here is a little photo montage of the hackle slinger's way of life.

WyoChukar,

I am about 3 months away from retiring and about 6 months away from moving to Nebraska.

Every time you start posting these wonderful pictures, I wonder if another 500 miles west wouldn’t be a better idea!

WyoChukar,

Thanks buddy for the great pictures, loved them all. We got to get you a good F.E. Thomas Bamboo 3 Wgt Fly Rod. You do have some nice stuff already also! I have one of those reels myself!

Wyochuckar great pictures as always. MSM I feel the same way especially after heading west this fall. But I would show up with a spinning rod and everybody would be like who the heck is this guy.

Mark, with 6 months left, consider it. Either way you will be glad to live where your eyes get to focus on distant objects. I just spent two weeks in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri. Some of that country is pretty, but I couldn't get over the feeling that the world seemed so terribly small while I was there. I guess I just don't belong where I can't go off and be alone in a matter of minutes. I was instantly happier as soon as I entered Kansas and Nebraska.

Gran 16, I have caught plenty of trout on spinning rods too. Picked up a rainbow trout last night while fishing for walleyes with a 9' spin outfit. I mostly use fly equipment for trout because I catch fish more consistently that way and do have more fun using fly rods. That said, I have picked a fair share of golden trout with a $2 bamboo cane pole!

WyoChukar,

I have lived in Connecticut all my life. The first visit to Iowa in 1993 made me feel like I could breathe. Every trip that feeling returns as soon as I cross Mississippi.

I can remember in 1995 standing in brohm grass and foxtail during a snow squall in SD. Watching the clouds coming from so far away, with the sun peaking through here and there. My Britt Maverick had just retrieved the last rooster of the day and I stood there and yelled at the top of my lungs just taking it all in and feeling so alive. No one could hear me but I am sure Maverick thought I skipped a groove. What a memory and the reason I love the big sky so much.

We spend our summers in our little cabin about 10 miles south of Telluride, CO.
It overlooks a mountain lake at 10,000 ft., elevation. I spend the whole time fly fishing the rivers nearby and fishing with friends around Crested Butte. Nothing but bamboo fly rods and bird dogs in the fall.

We are blessed! High mountain cutthroats are the best!

Gentlemen,

For years one of my friends has been after me to move permanently to Montana, says I do not belong in the east any more. He maybe right, the big sky country calls me all the time, unfortunately I have invested to much into the Pa back woods life style to move at age 70. Should have made the move when I retired from uncle sam, my wife's career was not over quite yet and we stayed in Pa.

Brookies are best! Brownies are good also.

Wyochuker, any chance you might consider adopting an old man almost eligible for a senior citizen discount card, and house trained?

Wyo, thanks for the pics. I have not been fly fishing in years and keep swearing “next year”. Unfortunately my business is at it’s busiest during the spring, summer and fall.
Some nice looking fish and scenery but that is one ugly trout in pic #5.
MSM, 500-700 miles makes a world of difference.
I was born an Idaho boy and will remain so until they scatter my ashes.
I like Wyoming. Lots to do from the sage desert to the mountains.
If you come just a little further west and look into southeast Idaho, you may well find paradise as well. I am really fond of the area north and east of Idaho Falls near the Wyoming border.
But you had better hurry!! Property is getting expensive very quickly.
