Not sure if anyone else has encountered this -

But some manufacturers 209 primers don't fit in other manufacturer's hulls - some have to be hard pressed into the primer pocket, where others go in with finger pressure.

As example: Winchester 209s seem loose as a goose in Cheddite hulls

I seem to recall reading somewhere that there is a difference in outside diameters of various manufacturers 209 primers.

Can anybody provide technical data ?

Ah so !

These dimensions are as follows:

.240 = Rem.

.241 = CCI, Fed,

.242 = Nobel Sport, Win, Wolf,

.243 = Cheddite, Fiocchi,

.244 = Rio.

These dimensions are from an article by Tom Ceretto in Trapshooting USA, issue 4, page 50, Nov/Dec 2009

Win 209's fit perfectly fine in all of my Herter's Cheddite hulls. I have heard a lot of stories about Rio hulls being loose though. I have not loaded any of those though.

I agree with Wyochukar, I use w209's in Herters and Winchester game load cheddites with no fit problems. Same in Federals and Remington Game loads(RGL)

I reloaded a box of factory Rios over the weekend using Cheddite primers. The crimps were excellent but the primer pockets were so loose that many of the primers simply fell out down to the bottom of the bin.

I retrieved the loose primers and reseated all of them with a tiny dot of red thread locker, and it seems to be holding...but we shall see.

Not sure the price discount on Rio hulls is worth all the trouble however.

B.

Years ago I found a shotgun primer chart that lists all the primer dimensions and posted it over my loading bench. It is quite handy when you're wondering about the physical fit of a primer in a particular hull. I'll pull it off the wall and figure out how to post it on here for your viewing pleasure.

They are also a excellent primer on par with Federal in performance. Make a good primer for worn primer pockets and are what I use in Cheddite ,Fio,and Rio hulls.

rio 12ga cases come in 2 ilks . the4 star bases are typical Cheddites - wins etc fit nicely . There is a 2nd type rio marked rio ammo on the base - these are the loose ones . have dealt with many of these at one of the trap clubs . 16's could be the same .

Will Cheddite primers fit securely in Remington or Federal Hulls?

Rio's, Fio's and Nobel's hulls, seem to be a little larger, in reality, (YMMV).
Rio's & Nobel Sport primers seem to be good quality. I picked up the NS primers during the drought.
Some Wolf as well. Can't find much data on the Wolf, saving for a rainy day, and treat as hot I suppose.
Noticed the last trip to the local supply house, that Cheds have changed their packaging....

I used up a couple sleeves of Wolf primers a decade or so back. No data on them, but I mostly load light anyway so did not worry. Good primers with a Winchester-like step and they loaded easily without stretching pockets. My only concern was that they seemed hard, judging from the small dimples produced by the firing pins, but I never had a FTF. Wish they were still available at the price I paid then!

Earlier I mentioned primer dimension chart I had downloaded and had posted over my loading bench. I finally remembered it when I had time to get it on here. It has helped me a bunch over the years.
