skeettx,
Mike the gun unfortunately looks to have been sleeved for 22 Hornet, nice for off the shelf purchase, however a might light for what I wanted. Still I am considering it, fantastic 1800's Side Lock J.P. Sauer Drilling. The German style engraving looks to be some of Spanglers Best. One serious German Best gun for sure.
Disappointed the gun was sleeved.

What caliber is the gun you are considering?
What do you consider minimal?
An old 9.3x72 might be fun

Mike
The16x 6.5 X57R would have been perfect, as close to the .257 Roberts as they probably ever made. Back when they sleeved this gun here in the USA the 6.5x57R was probably real hard to purchase. I am still considering the purchase, I like that particular model 26 J.P. Side Lock and the beautiful engraving on it. The gun would be great for Turkey and Coyote, as I Grouse hunt.

I have never heard of a 5x57R, are you certain of the markings and not that the 6 was left off of the 6.5x57R?
Or maybe a 5.6x57R

The .22 Hornet would be fine for turkey or coyote....especially in a non-scoped drilling or combination outfit used for as-they-come shot opportunities. |

tramroad28,
Yes and the shells will be available right off the shelf in most any store. It definitely is something to consider, and this Drilling side lock gun is seriously nice. Still the 6.5x57R would have been a lot better set up.

skeettx,
Mike, the heck with the Box Lock 12 gauge 30-06, scroll down and take a good look at the J.P. Sauer 16 gauge side lock 9.3x72R, with the full game scene Engraving, now that is a serious Drilling Gun. Scroll a little further there is another one with full spinning clays engraving. Both guns will come in around $4000.00
For the money I still like the Model 26 J.P Side Lock Drilling that was dropped to me in my e-mail, nice clean 1880's gun, with the sleeved .22 Hornet rifling for around $2,000. A very nice Drilling Gun.

Mike,
Trying to get my money together to make the purchase, still have not been able to sell our old home, need to be careful with the money out flow, other wise I would have purchased the gun already.
