This one I have coming is supposed to be choked modified. I wish it was IC instead, but the longer shots may be common place enough that the mod works better for me. I do ok with the modified bbl on my superposed shooting SC and skeet. Maybe I’ll be satisfied with a shorter cylinder or skeet choked spare bbl for close in hunts alternatively.

Picked up the A5 today. It looks good overall as far as I can tell. I noticed that the recoil adjustable ring was installed backwards, and had a wee edge curl on the sharp leading edge which I eased off to smooth it up. Did an overall clean and inspect, and put a coat of feed and wax on that old wood which shined it up nicely. Then I couldn't wait any longer, so I took her out back and ran a few rounds through her in a trial run on the pattern board. Well......first thing that came to mind was....SWEET!!! I almost didn't feel the recoil! Was shooting 1oz loads of Federal game loads, and even though I had set up the recoil rings in the Heavy Load configuration, it cycled just fine. I can't get over how soft the recoil is though! I was a bit worried that it might hammer me like that sorry Franchi 48AL did. The LOP is about 3/4" too long for me, but it surprisingly isn't shooting too high at 21 yrds. Will be investigating patterns more thoroughly though, and time will tell how off it really is for me. So far, I'm very happy with this gun. That @28" barrel has a nice swing to it. Dove season won't get here soon enough!

Thanks for the encouragement. At about half the cost of a new version SW16, I think it was a real bargain. Once I got it in my hands, it was easy to see why they were so popular. I am looking forward to taking her a field.

I'm of the opinion that the Auto-5 in general and the Sweet Sixteen in particular is the greatest auto-loading shotgun ever made by the hands of man. They're real workhorses that just never quit without adding a ton of bulk. They cycle everything you can throw at them with at best a slight adjustment to the friction collar and are just a pleasure to carry all day in the field. You're gonna love that gun.

Having a Lightweight 12 and a Magnum 20 requires a Sweet 16 to round out the collection.

How is it to shoot the lightweight 12? Compared to shooting a Remington 1100, is the recoil a little stouter, or very much harder? I grew up shooting a remy 1100 12ga., and later added an old Steven’s 12ga pump. For their weight, neither whallop you.

I perceive the felt recoil, all else equal, to be softer in a Model 1100.

But really, I suspect the most appreciable difference between the two shotgun's recoil is in the nature of the bump....rather than in the measure of bump.

Great find! The engraving is really clean, and overall the gun is very well kept.
Mine is 12 years it's senior, and the old engraving is much better, I think. Depends on the men training, and who did it. Yours was obviously done with the utmost pride and patience.
I love the dark wood on an A5, reminds me of my Granddad's.
