for those in the mfg'ing field, you know the 20% rule in design infringement.
if you make a product that resembles another product, yours must have 20% differences in design.
case in point for ammo.....
choices are: hull color, crimp, powder, type base, wad, packaging, and yet it all must fall into the safe category with saami.
its not easy since there are already so many.
so...the cheapest way is to merge.
companies do a group think, merge, negotiate, and use each others resources to make a product for both companies from one assy line.
federal is good at this.
look at why win quality went down hill.
instead of retooling assy lines with proven standards, they replaced their old school quality with cheaper machines and changed hull design to mimic the euro business model. which is...'make it cheap enough so people wont want to reload.'

I hope herters wont go that route, but all indications point that direction.

I hope they bring back those soft 12ga target loads (1060 fps according to the box); my ol' Parker SBT loves 'em. I've been hoarding my last two boxes and I haven't been able to bring myself to shoot them!

I was also in the Minnesota Cabelas a week or so ago. Herters shells in newly designed box. Maybe that's a sign of new products.

if anyone buys some, and has old ones, compare them for us and lets see what they look like inside and out.

Gentlemen,

Have you seen any new Herter 2 1/2" shells for our pre 1913 L.C. Smith and Best J.P. Sauer double guns? Would be real nice if Federal started making them at a more reasonable cost than the RST or Poly SpredR's.

Not sure I get the problem with Cheddite/Herter hulls and the primer size.

Over the last several years I have loaded a pretty good sized pile of the Herter's 12 gauge hulls and a few hundred 16 gauge Herter's hulls. I only use Federal 209A and Winchester primers for my 12 and 16 gauge Sporting loads and there was never a problem with primers. They all have fit tight and since I shoot SA's if there were loose primers it certainly would have shown up.

I really like the Cheddite hulls and they seem to outlast anything else on the current market where the 16 gauge is concerned.

bobski,

What does SAAMI have to do with it?

SAAMI sets standards relating to the suitability, sizing and performance of ammunition and the testing of the ammunition. Which components a company chooses to use to meet those performance standards is not stipulated by SAAMI and does not need to be and could be a conflict of interest when you consider who directs SAAMI.

But SAAMI is not a watchdog. They set the standards for ammunition, but they do not enforce them. It is up to the ammunition companies to follow the standards.

I checked the local store today: quite a bit of Herters rifle ammo, .22 and 9mm. The only shotgun shells I saw were 12ga 7-1/2 and 8's, 1255 and 1290fps. Shiny black hulls, silver base.
