I need a little help with a reloading recipe. I was given about 1000 BPI SG-16S wads. I think they are for 3/4 oz loads. None of my current reloading information lists this wad. Does anyone have loading data for this wad?
I have a variety of components:
Hulls: 1) Herters, 2) Fiocchi, 3) Federal Game
Powders: 1) Red Dot, 2) Longshot, 3) Clays, 4) Universal
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Brewer

I too got about 1000 of those wads.

I load them in Cheddite hulls that I cut down to 2.5".

Cheddite Primer
14 g 700x Powder
7/8 oz shot.

Gives a nice crimp with no filler. It is my favorite target load.

Use at your own risk.

What are you trying to accomplish? Short "light" load w/o fillers? Fit as much lead in a shell possible?

As far as I know the SG16S wad is for when the stack height is too tall (bulky powder or cramming a larger load in a short hull) in a given recipe. The few tabs in the powder cup allow it to settle deeper into the powder than it's cousin SG16' many posts allowing more head room for shot and cards and such.

My short range load is similar to John's, Ched's cut to RST 2 9/16 length, but I find I need the regular SG16 to make the 23gram of lead fit w/o filler.

In short, I use the 2 wads interchangeably depending on recipe stack-up to avoid using fillers.

Hops this helps....

I have to apologize here. The wad that I am using is the Sporting 16 wad. It is not the SG 16S.

So does the bag also say '#072sg16" ? I use those for 1 oz in cheddites like your herters. Also have used the universal powder but it burns a little dirty. Gr dot or international probably would burn cleaner.

Brewer,

The SG-16S wads are for straight wall hulls such as Cheddite, Herters, Fiocchi, Rio, and others cut down to 2 1/2". I use the SG-16S with 2 1/2" Cheddite and Herters hulls, 1 oz lead shot, 20.5 gr 800X, Cheddite primers. If you use 800-X you should verify your powder bushing capacity with a powder scale.

Thanks for the help. It looks like I need to get a new reloader for 2-1/2" hulls. I just purchased a new (to me) Mec 9000G 16ga reloader. My wife would not be pleased with me bringing home another machine. I'm stuck with 2-3/4" hulls for a while.

I believe that MEC makes a 'Short Kit' for that reloader. It is inexpensive and does not require a lot of effort or adjustments to install. It is very simple to go back to 2 3/4" hulls.

What's the goal? Need/make 2.5" shells or use the windfall wads?

You've probably already discovered that the MEC Short Kit is only available for single-stage models.

I looked on the 16 ga. spreadsheet under loads by wad and there were three 7/8 oz loads listed. They were very high velocity and the source was "Load of the Week." which I believe comes from Ballistic Products. They used a Cheddite hull and 20/28 powder. I'm not going to quote those loads because I'm leery of Ballistic Product's data. That said, you could contact them and see what they have to say.

I don't know how to pass this spreadsheet on to you, but there is a member here "old hunter" who at one time made it available to anyone.

Anyone know how to get the spreadsheets to Brewer?

Dave,

I missed the 9000G part. You are correct Short Kits are only for single stage machines.

No biggy, Mark. I was hoping to get one when I had a 16 ga. Grabber. The Grabber is gone and I'm loading on a Sizemaster. Now that I'm retired I have more time to reload. Smile

Spreadsheet is downloadable and can be emailed.

I have a couple versions of it on my computer from July '18 or so I think - although I combined all the different tabs and just put filters on it to quickly search recipes based on component. I can e-mail if he drops me a PM with info.
