Hello all!

This is my first post! I was finally able to get registered!

My name is Jordan, and I live in East TN. I grew up in Western KY and the edge of Middle Tennessee.

I came off to college and settled down in East TN. It really is a beautiful place.

A little more about me. I grew up very close to my paternal Grandfather.

He taught me the values of hard work; he was a retired coal miner from Western KY that went into the cattle business. He co-owned and operated a livestock stockyard with his brother that I grew up around and worked at. I learned a lot from that place and worked many a hot days in the summer saving money for my first truck and a couple of guns along the way.

I think I was really blessed to have my Papaw and his brother Woody in my childhood. The stockyard got sold and I went off to college and became a mechanical engineer. A lot of this had to do with my Great Uncle Woody teaching me about car, tractors, and trucks in my youth. His mind works much like mine.

My Papaw got a form of cancer of the digestive track. He had a major surgery and lasted about a year after that bed bound. I got to see him about a week before he passed and new it was time in October of 2018. Luckily my Uncle Woody is still with us and I call and talk to him about once a week.

Now you are probably wondering how a 16 ga fits into this story?? Now onto that part!

My Papaw grew up in the old south, when farming practices were different and Bobwhites were abundant. Long before I came along he kept a bird dog and bought a Winchester Model 12 16 ga off his cousin. That was his jewel. He sent it off to Simmons to have a vent rib and butt pad added.

He eventually quit Bobwhites and moved onto Mallards and Geese with 12 ga guns, but he put up that Model 12 and it is great shape.

I shot it some as a teenager at starlings and other pest birds around the farm. The last good visit I had with him before he passed, he told me to take the Model 12 16ga with me. I have the gun at my home now and it is my new go to gun for Doves and other upland birds (if I ever get to hunt any!).

Now I have all of his guns, as no one else in the family hunts or shoots, but I will take the Model 12 to my grave. I will never let this gun go and cherish it forever!

I am sorry for such a long post, but I don't know another way to handle an intro other than to just tell it.

I've added some pictures of the Model 12 when I got it home, and I also sent in some emails over to Phil at Field and Stream and he featured it on there online blog for blast from the past last year. See that story at this link --> https://www.fieldandstream.com/blast-from-past-winchester-model-12/

I'll add some more pictures when I figure out how.

Welcome aboard. It is good to have you here and like you stated, the best way to do an intro is just tell it. Nice gun. Do your best to let 'er see some sunshine when you can.

Ford4wd,

Welcome to the 16 forum, interesting stuff about your family. The M12, 16 gauge looks like a real nice gun, have fun with it, and make some new memories of your own.

Thank you all for the welcome! I'm counting down the days until the dove opener here in TN.

I'm trying to get some practice in prior to season as well.

Howdy OP, glad to have you aboard. That M12 looks ready to go! A very special shotgun indeed too.

Nice Model 12, Jordan, and as a family heirloom even more special. Best of luck on doves and any other birds you get to hunt with it, have you checked that it's plugged for 3 shots?

Yes, I have confirmed it has the plug in it.

True Story: I once had a guy at our local public dove field tell me that they had removed the plug restriction. He saw it in the news. He was hunting with his 24" barrel Winchester 1300 12 ga for doves with no plug.

I had briefly mentioned it was a federal statue that had been around for close to 100 years and I seriously doubted the restriction was removed.

It was quite funny when the game warden walked around and checked him and made him leave the field and wrote him a ticket.

Hate it for the guy, but the TWRA that manages the field clearly tells everyone on the opening day safety talk that you WILL be checked by the local game warden.
