Anyone have experience upland hunting the Charles Russell wildlife area in Montana? Planning a trip this fall and thought someone on this forum may have some insight or advice. Thanks in advance for any info. |

In the '90's I hunted the south side several years coming in from Jordan and hunting mule deer. Don't remember encountering any game birds. A few years back I was hunting the BMA's around Saco and decided to spend a day checking out the north side. I did encounter a few covies of sharptail well north of the river, but there was so much cactus it wasn't worth the trouble. |

Sorry, my last time was in 1975, I suppose my info is quite dated.
Good advice in those days, if you see a gas station, STOP, and get gas

My friend and I did "Blast and Cast" trips in Montana in 2004 and 2006. We stayed in Great Falls and hunted ducks and fished for trout on the Missouri River south of Great Falls.
We hunted birds on private land and walk-in areas in the so called Fairfield Bench area west and north of Great Falls where we found pheasants, Sharpies and Huns. |

Wow, that sounds like an awesome idea.
Does everyone hunt these areas with dogs, or just walk and flush?
I would love to plan a trip like that. |

We hunted and fished with a guide, T J Laviolette (Troutwest Fly Fishing) who had a German Wirehair Pointer at the time. Google Troutwest Fly Fishing for current information. |

TJ at TroutWest also can provide the fly fishing eqipment if necessary. I had not used a fly rod for over 40 years. Back then I was fishing farm ponds for bass, blue gill and crappie with popping bugs, which is a whole lot different than fishing with a #20 dry fly for trout. However he was very patient, and it didn’t take long for me to get the hang of it. |
