Would not the steel rub through the petals and score the barrel???

It maybe possible with a Mylar wrap inside the wad, but would need to get the load tested. It adds a step to the loading process when there are already suitable wads and data available.

That being said I just saw where precision reloading is offering their 16ga steel wads pre slit

Steel shot needs to be loaded with heavier wads made for steel. BPI usually has them.

Got it. I was hoping to try it with steel 7s in an open choked gun.

A few years back, I read about some guy that was loading 12 gauge target loads of #7 steel. He was shooting at either Seaway near St. Petersburg, where in Florida or that club Naperville, Illinois that requires nontoxic shot.

He was using standard lead shot wads and the lead shot powders such as Red Dot. He was measuring the shot by volume. IE: 1 1/8 oz lead volume charge bar delivered about 3/4 oz of #7 steel.

He claimed that the loads performed very well for trap. He claimed no damage to his gun.

He has later had the load pressure tested and it was about 6300 psi.

If you do some searching on the web, you can probably find his info.

I do not know if the practice of loading steel in a lead shot targets recipe would apply to 16 gauge.

Here is a link. See the contribution by "spitter".
