Been shooting and reloading 12 ga. and 20 ga. for several years and I am getting things together to start loading for a Stevens 311C in 16 ga. I have 500 new 2 3/4" primed Cheddite hulls from Grafs and SG16 wads. I have about 3 pounds of Hercules Unique that I would like to use up to start with. Will mostly load 7/8 oz for sporting clays and skeet, but will also load some 1 oz for grouse hunting and longer clays targets. After the first firing I will reload them with Win. 209 primers.

Looking at Lyman #5, the closest loads I can find are:

Fiocchi hull
21.0 gr. Unique
Win. 209
B.P. SG16
1 oz.
1258 fps, 8,500 psi

and

Winchester Hull with plastic base wad
21.0 gr. Unique
Win. 209
Rem. SP16
1 oz.
1271 fps, 8,700 psi

I would like to keep the velocity slightly lower, about 1200 fps, so for my 1 oz load I thinking of:

Cheddite hull
19.5 gr. Unique (what my 155 bushing throws)
Cheddite primer (or Win. 209)
SG16
1 oz.

For my 7/8 oz load I would use the same except add a cheerio filler. I would try the DR16 wad, but nobody seems to have them in stock anywhere. I have done a lot of searching here and this would seem to be similar to what a lot of you guys are loading the Cheddite hulls with.
Also, I will start with a Lee Load All that I got some time ago. I do have and "extra" 12 ga. Mec 600 Jr. that I might convert to 16 ga. later on, but will start with the Lee.
Any tips or input would be greatly appreciated.

The volumes of the 16ga straight walled hulls are for all practical purposes interchangeable. Primers, of course will vary the pressure given all comments are otherwise the same. I load 7/8oz with a Winchester primer, stacked card load, in a federal hull for pen birds using 18.3 grains of unique. Dirty, but soft on the shoulder and effective on quail and chukar.

Instead of a Cheerio, way not just buy the correct wad for 7/8 and get it over with.

The Downrange DR-16 with all the other components you have will work just fine.....and no Cheerio.

I load new Cheddites on my 9000G with the DR-16 with no issues .

While I liked the DR 16 wad for fit with 7/8 oz loads, I found them to be very inconsistent in Cheddite hulls.

I had many blooper shots with DR 16. I never experienced this with Claybuster or SG16 wads.

Tom Armbrust did the testing.

Cheddite 2 3/4" 16 gauge hull
Winchester 209 primer
18.0 Grains American Select
DownRange DR-16 wad
3/4 oz. #7 1/2 Lead shot

Avg. Velocity - 1339 FPS - 2 Sd - 7 EV
Avg Pressure - 9,480 PSI - 300 PSI - EV

Cheddite 2 3/4" 16 gauge hull
Winchester 209 primer
23.0 Grains Universal
DownRange DR-16 wad
7/8 oz. #7 1/2 Lead shot

Avg. Velocity - 1424 FPS - 10 Sd - 25 EV
Avg Pressure - 11,180 PSI - 1000 PSI - EV

Pretty good stuff......All due respect the wad isn't causing the inconsistent ballistics.

Probably not just the wad. I load 7/8 oz lead shot over 14 grains 700x with a Cheddite primer in a Cheddite hull. I use the Claybuster wad and pinto beans as filler. It chronographs at 1233 fps (3 shot average).

DR 16 gives some soft and slow shots with that load.

I am sure it does.

If you look on the Hodgdon website, 14.0 grains of 700-X with a 1 oz. payload in a Federal hull only produces 8,300 PSI.

Drop 1/8 oz. of shot and that pressure is down in the 6,000 PSI range. THe Cheddite hull is a little more spacious so that will drop the pressure farther.

That is a very anemic load pressure wise. That is why you are having trouble. That load needs powder. It isn't a wad issue.

The DR-16 has some very long legs and they collapse easily, which probably drops the pressure more than the CB wads.

Please, I do not think the load that I am using needs more powder.

The fact that I am achieving 1233 fps with 7/8 oz of shot using only 14 grains of powder suits me just fine. Not being able to use the DR16 wad is a very small sacrifice for an inexpensive, low pressure decent velocity load.

I've loaded 17 gr International Clays with the DR-16 wad, 7/8 oz shot and a cheddite primer in the Herters cheddite case for quite a few years without incident.

If I could find somewhere that has the DR16 in stock I would gladly try them. I don't know whats up with Downrange, but it's hard to buy their products when no one has them.

I saw that you are having trouble finding the DR16.

I checked out all the places I have bought from and couldn't find anything either.

The folks at DownRange need to get going.

I've found that the places that do have them on hand are outrageous on price. I can alter the CB wad in seconds and have no problem in cheddite hull. The cost savings is worth the time. 1225 to 1247 fps is average with 21grs 20/28.

John, which reloading press are you using?

It's a Versa-Mec.
