First off I’m not sponsored/paid by Boss.

I took the plunge and ordered the bulk pack of 100 1oz #5 copper plated Bismuth from Boss shot shells.

I opened the shipping box to find a nice waxed canvas shell bag

Bulk packaging

My bulk order of 100 contained 103 of which one was kinked

I cut the kinked one open to see the components and get some weights.
Shot

Most of the shot was .125” putting it at #4 1/2 shot. Maybe the copper plating ands some to the #5 size.

Chedditte hull and primer? Gualandi short wad?

Powder charge.

Lastly is the load and performance data sheet that was in the waxed canvas bag. These run pretty high velocity and thus chamber pressures when it’s warm out per their testing at 68 degrees.

I did patten some at 30 and 40 yards recoil was fairly stout and patterns good at an average of 67% at 30 yards from a mod choke and 69% at 40 yards from a full choke. I don’t upland bird hunt much but duck hunt a lot and have no doubt these will work well.

Could you be so kind as to post the web site address here for Boss? Would be appreciated.

.125" would be 4 1/2's, look like a decent deal and quality shells. Thanks for posting the information and data.

That's not a terrible price for those shells and a somewhat reasonable option for anyone wishing to avoid the harder shot types. The patterns are about what old standard lead loads delivered and I would expect those shells to do about anything that #6 lead or #4 steel can be expected to do. I may have to look at whether or not there is an option for 2 7/8" 10 ga. for the damascus Parker.

No dice. It looks like if I want something for that short 10, I will probably be loading my own.

That shell looks great!
In my opinion after doing a ton of ballistics looking at bismuth, #4.5 is the optimal pellet size for ducks, or even 4s. I wouldn't go down to 5s as they give the same range as steel 3s basically, and you can already stuff enough steel 3s into a 1oz or in 16ga a 400gr duck load. The 4.5s get you out to 43 yds or so for good 1.5" penetration on mallards. The advantage of 4.5s is you get a bit more pellet count than 4s but still are lethal to about as far as anyone shoots ducks. I would ABSOLUTELY be happy to get 4.5s instead of 5s for ducks!

I heard BOSS was going to make 16ga, now I see they are also doing 28ga! As of right now, with them being actually 4.5 instead of 5s, I consider this the #1 commercial 16ga waterfowl load available.

Isn't 11500 PSI the SAAMI max for 16 ga. It looks like some of these at room temp were over that, but its hard to read the picture. Might be an issue for a day that starts out cold then warms as the sun comes up.
