So this is my question , I have a limited access to reloading components , I mostly hunt grouse but the odd time I get invited to duck hunt. I have a fave 1 ounce lead 16 gauge load for grouse and a stash of bismuth shot . I installed the 1 1/8 charge bar on my MEC and found that with that the weight of the shot was over 27 grams one ounce lead is 28 grams can I replace the lead with bismuth? |

Sometimes, Yes you can just substitute Bismuth for lead, but there are some loads that just don't cooperate.
It is better to use published data. The two below are good sources.
Hodgdon has data here:
https://www.hodgdonreloading.com/
There is also data in the 5th Edition of the Lyman Shotshell Manual. |

NO. Not by weight as you are trying to do!
The issue is that the increased VOLUME, which you are trying to load using a 9/8 bar to replace 1oz of lead, gives more wad surface friction thus more pressure.
If you were to use the 1oz bar, do your standard recipe using same volume bar, thus ending up with less weight of bismuth but same volume, you would be making changes in the safe less pressure direction. I'd still get it tested.
Or better, just use one of the many of bismuth recipes around. See hodgdon and BPI Load of the week page. |

Whoa Skeeve,
I read your post wrong. I was assuming that you were substituting 1 oz. of Bismuth for 1 1/8 oz. of lead.
Thanks Dave your post made me realize what Skeeve was asking. |

Thanks a bunch guys , figured it was probably more complicated than that. Looks like the best bet for me is to get some sp 16,s Remington wads. |

yah, between Lyman's 5th and LotW there's 38 1oz or 1-1/8oz 16ga bismuth recipes... tell what parts you already have and we can probably find a valid recipe. |
