I'm trying for a good substitute for this great shell that I love on Pheasant. I decided to take one apart and was surprised at what they had in it. I would not have said it was perfect for the shell based on my limited experience as a reloader, but from experience, I know it works well. It had 11/8 oz nickle plated #5, 22.5gr of some flaked powder, and an SG16s wad. Yes, a short SG16 wad. I thought this lack of support from the wad was supposed to give barrel scrubbing and deformed shot etc. Well, If it does, I can't tell it. This is a companion thread to the 11/8 oz loads in a Fiocchi shell. Part of the same project |

Wads that might not hold the entire shot payload are underrated by a lot of folks. The bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of the payload are the pellets that get beat up from the forces of setback/acceleration. The closer you get to the front of the shot column these forces are less than the lower layers.
If you have ever patterned card and fiber loads, you would be surprised how well they pattern.....and that is with no protection from bore scrub.
It isn't only bore scrub that deforms pellets it is the setback forces of acceleration that deform more pellets than bore scrub. |

Also pellet hardness makes a big difference . And "good" nickel plating . |

Well msm, I know these loads from the factory work well on birds, I've never patterned a factory load on paper, but I've patterned a lot on birds |
