I am looking to reload bismuth and itx for the 16. Is the 16ga manual from BPI the best place to start. I've reloaded handgun and rifle ammo but this is my first venture into shotguns. I have some help with a friend who reloads his 12, but he only loads one recipe that he has used for over 20 years.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. |

Lymans 5th edition shotshell reloading handbook has quite a few bismuth recipes. |

I found the BPI 16 gauge manual to be scant on bismuth data. |

Do you have hulls, wads, primers etc.? If so what do you have? Are you looking for a certain payload weight and/or velocity?
BPI has good quality stuff, that isn't the issue. Their methods and data are questionable, and that is about as nice as I can say it. |

All I have at the moment is the want to. I have a mec in 12ga and I don't know whether to convert it to 16 or sell and buy a 16 mec reloader. I have some federal hulls but not many.
I have a recipe from loads I purchased off this site that I like, it is 1 1/4oz bismuth #2 , pt1680 wad, with blue dot for 11400psi at 1300fps, and the other is 1oz #2 bismuth using longshot for 9900psi at 1375fps.
I would love to eventually have a load of either #3 or 4 bismuth for ducks and use either #1 or 2s for geese. I am using Kent 5s right now for ducks and using these #2 loads for geese, however the waterfowl are not on the same script.
Thanks for the replys. |

I don’t load bismuth, but I owned the BPI 16 ga manual and loaded lead or tried to load lead.
The loads I tried were way off on stack height. I tossed the manual. |

My 2 cents.
If you have a single stage MEC, the conversion kits work out pretty good and you still have the 12 gauge dies to use if you need them.
Since you have the reloading data then you know what you need to buy.
Bismuth is not like steel and in the 16 I am not a big fan of larger pellet sizes, even #4's can be a bit iffy depending on the gun.
Not sure at the yardages you are shooting but I don't see why #5 or #4 bismuth won't kill ducks.
I haven't killed a lot of ducks with bismuth, but #5's seem to work pretty well. |
