I'm fighting with an old Photobucket account to try to save some photography from many years back. In that process, I am reminded of so-many hard winters before this one, and the springs that inevitably follow. Here's a few shots from those better days...

End of the season, and chasing grouse in Pennsylvania w/a pre-WW2 Model 37 in 16.

That is a nice pair of Grangers with a FrankenPflueger too. A Victory and an Aristocrat?

Ruffhunter: Very close, an 8040 Aristocrat and an early 9043? Colorado Special from the 1920s. The later Pflueger is post Bert Franke but....still need left-hand retrieve.

WOW! A 9043 Denver Special is a rare bird! I'm afraid I'm envious.

I had Bill Franke customize a 1494 for me before he passed and his successor Dan Hill did two more for me. It probably cost me as much for all three as an original 1594 would cost. Although, I got really lucky on Ebay one day and won a beat to shit later model 1594 with the 16/4 drag plate for LHW, that was listed as a 1494. I only realized what it was by looking closely at the pictures. That currently resides in the one I had Mr. Franke customize.

Bill, not Burt, sorry. That 16/4 LH drag plate is a big deal. Dan's done a number of reels for me too. Old reels are almost as much fun as old guns. Dan's 8 by 8 LH units are fine, but....

Yeah, but his 8/8's are a lot nicer then the nylon drag plates. Big improvement.

No question. Dan's parts are way better than the alternative. As far as the 9043 goes, I'm not sure that was even a designation then, all I know is this is a 9-foot 5-weight (even with silk line).

This drag plate is 16/2, but...it's right hand.

It came out of this reel, which Dan converted for me.

Cant get the pix of the LH version of this reel to load(?)

Lloyd3,

What you want is a Bamboo F.E. Thomas 7' 3-4 Wgt and one of those old time reels. I use mine all the time on Pine Creek and it's one sweet rod and reel combo.

A might cold out there for it right now however.

F.E. Thomas Man

Here is a nice J.D. Wagner 3 Wgt Bamboo, I use on the West Branch.
