I have plenty of data for 5/8 oz. loads in 16 ga. and reduced the powder charges for two reasons: save powder and the fact that I really don't need a 1600-1700 fps load to break targets. That said, I can't say what my pressures are, only that they are a lower than the published loads that use more powder. So, my question is, do any of you have 5/8 oz. data with verified pressure in the 6,000-8,000 psi range? |

Have not seen any 5/8 oz loads listed, but enough 3/4 oz loads, that I would expect pressures to be slightly lower. Like you, have no need for hypervelocity loads, and their assoc. recoil. I shoot all old, vintage guns, often Damascus, and love hammer guns. I load 3/4 and 7/8 oz loads.
At a recent Back 40 shoot at my friends house, a neighbor boy showed up with a light little 16 ga single shot and a box of 1 1/8 oz pheasant loads. After a few shots, I noticed his reluctance to shoot when it was his turn. I switched him over to my 3/4 oz loads, and his smile returned, and clays broke. Sent him home with 2 boxes of my light reloads.
5/8 oz loads sound interesting, but think I will stay with my 3/4 oz loads--splitting hairs here anyway. |

I used 5/8 oz. loads of 8 1/2 shot with 15 gr. Promo, DR 16 wad, and Win 209 in WW CF hulls and liked the results very much, but I don't shoot competition either. Seems like I could find a similar load (with a different powder, probably Green Dot or International) for 2 1/2" hulls that would be between 5,000-6,000 psi. |

Wyochukar,
Why the low pressures? |

Had this powder puff tested by Mr Armbrust in'16, built for one of my 2.5" O/U's that weighs next to nothing and is a joy in Tshirt weather. I bumped the powder up to 14.5grn so to fill w/o cheerios and a bit more speed, can't imagine the pressure anywhere near being concerned about.
2 9/16" 16ga Ched (RST equiv), w209, 14g Promo/Red Dot, SG16, 23grm lead ~350 pellets of #9 smashes short to mid range clays in warm weather, 6 fold.

Why the low pressure? Thin barreled damascus Parker. Decided it was to thin. Recommendations were no heavier than 7/8 oz. and better yet stick to 3/4 oz. at 5,500 psi. A good 5/8 load for short hulls is still good info since 5/8 will load easier in the short hull than the 2 3/4".
Thanks for the data putz463! Gives me a great starting point. I doubt the pressure would be anything to worry about when substituting a DR16 wad and using these in my other guns, all of which handle standard ammo just fine. |

I have a friend that owns a damascus Parker(can't remember the model). I tried to buy it from him but it was his Dad's.
I even offered to build some black powder loads for him.......no go, he won't even shoot it.
Pics? |

Pics are in the thread about the unsure fate of a Parker GH 16 over on the general discussion side. I shipped the gun back this morning since it is below acceptable minimum wall thickness. I may just buy an english gun and be done with it. There are plenty for sale in the same price range. |
