So you know I must really be bored.....but, I am looking for a hand crank 16 gauge roll crimp tool. I see a lot of 12 gauge but no 16's except for the ones made in Russia that look like a half-a**ed corkscrew. Maybe I shouldn't feel this way but, just something about buying stuff from Russia I can't get past.
I don't want the ones sold by Precison or BPI, that are used in a drill press. Mostly because I have a 12 gauge Ideal roll crimper and the first shell came out perfect and also because I am not in a rush as this will only be used for hunting loads.....maybe.
Any ideas or is anyone interested in selling one?
Thanks! |

I have to geap roll crimper and even know it’s used in a drill press, it woks really well. Didn’t think I would use a drill press on my reloading bench but I have used it a bunch. I too looked for the hand roll crimper and found only the Russian ones. The other option is eBay and find an antique one. |

I have roll crimping tools from both BP and Precision, but no drill press. They work well with a hand drill. |

I bought one of the Russian roll crimpers. It works well, much better than the gizmo from BPI. I've mainly used it on paper hulls so far. |

Thank you folks.
Art (scraggley) was very generous and has offered me a roll crimper.
This is hands down the nicest forum, with the nicest people!! |

I could use one too if somebody else has one laying around they'd like to sell. |

I haven't looked in a good while, but eBay used to be infested with them. |

Somewhere about a year ago I'd say I seen new ones for sale . Made in the UK. Also there was a ink printer you put your loaded hull in. Turn the crack and it would roll ink on what ever image you put in it.
My computing skills are very nill. When I come across stuff I might show interest I can't find it when I go back.
Sometimes I wonder how I find my way back home. Must be why my wife wears a frown all the time. I find my way back. |

Got the roll crimper from scraggley (THANK YOU)
So here is my 3rd attempt.....getting better.
So I had to make hull cutter, not sure who posted the idea originally, but it worked perfect. Took a nice square piece of wood about like a 2 X 4 about 6" long, bored 3 - 3/4" holes in it, set the fence of my table saw at 2 1/2" from the blade. Pushed the wood firmly up against the fence, trapping the metal heads and ran it through the table saw.....worked perfect....the idea might have been from Mike Campbell, but whoever suggested it Thank you.
The other thing I did was, because these will be used in my 1100 and the crimp end comes out a bit too square was.....I backed off the crimp punch in my Sizemaster and ran the finished shell through the final crimp and it gave it the slightest bit of a taper. Hopefully I won't have any cycling problems.
If anyone has any suggestions...have at it.
Oh yeah....crimp depth is right at 0.100" not that you have any control over it. |

Hi Mark:
Lots better shell then I ever produce out of that old crimper! And using a hull that still has a fold crimp memory also. I found that a little wax wiped on the hull mouth helps sometimes!

Art,
I shortened the hulls to 2 1/2" which got rid of the crimp folds. |

Msm2019- looks pretty good. You may be able to get a little better crimp and for sure the taper if you use a geap crimper in a drill press. I got mine from Charles at geap from Italy. It was expensive and took about 2 weeks. They do very good crimps, but yours look good. |

RGuill96971,
I have heard good things about the Gaep products.
I have used the drill press style, not the Gaep, but the ones that Precision Reloading sells. I used them because at that time, time was money.
Now that I am retired and have the time to learn about the old stuff, that's what I am going to do.
Also, I am only going to use the roll crimp for a few boxes of hunting loads, each year.
Kinda enjoying this. |
