MSM2019-‘glad you’re knowledge is apast mine. Sounds like you may have volunteered. I will be ordering more powder, so what load do you recommend in 2 1/2 cheddite hull or rst with 1 oz load(7/8 if I have to). I need at least 7500-8000 psi and 1200-1250 fps. Will be shot in old A5. Thanks for your help. |

Since you are using a 1/8" thick filler wad for 7/8 oz. I would toss the filler wad and put in a 1 oz. payload of shot and be done with it.
The load would look like this.
Cheddite 2 1/2" hull
Cheddite 209 primer
21.0 grains Universal
Gualandi wad (the one you have)
1 oz. lead shot
This is a very typical 1 oz. load using Universal in a 2 3/4" hull. There is no reason why it can't go in a 2 1/2" hull as long as it fits....i.e. you can get a nice crimp. Crimp depth should be 0.055", which means a proper crimp depth.
Give me a few minutes for the 7/8 oz. load with a different powder. |

Thanks mark. Perfect. I would rather use 1 oz. it’s just easier. I will load some tonight. Finally found some universal at ballistic products and got a discount on the rip off hazmat fee. I have enough to try this load. |

OK....gotta agree, I developed all kinds of loads for the 16 right down to 3/4 oz. but I am really stuck on 1 oz. and 1 1/8 oz. for most of my 16 gauge shooting and hunting.
Although I do like this 7/8 oz. load in my 1100
Cheddite 2 3/4" hull
Winchester 209
23.0 grains UNiversal
DownRange DR-16 wad
7/8 oz. lead shot
1420 FPS 11,180 PSI
A little snappy in my Citori but it patterns very well in both the 1100 & Citori. |

I have been using that load with Universal, sg16,win209, 7/8 oz, in 2 1/2" cheddite for quite some time. I've never seen that. Shooting them in my old Parkers, Foxes, etc.
The recipie does not call for the felt wad , and I get great crimps w/o it. I think I actually use 19.5 gr Universal. Pretty popular load for vintage doubles.
There have been several GD loads on this forum in the past, but with the SG16 wad, and 2 1/2" cheddite, they were all 3/4 oz loads--I printed them all off--they work great also, but then again I am shooting them thru Damascus/composite barrels not an A-5 |

These load really well. Just what I was looking for. Hope the auto 5 likes them. It’s kind of funky on what it likes to eat. Guess I can’t complain being 110 years old. Do you happen to know the pressure and fps of this load? |

So to report back I shot the new load, and no sparks or flame from the barrel. Very soft recoil in the 69 sweet sixteen set up for heavy loads. Did some modified patterning, clay box on center stake of skeet field, patterns very well. This will be my new load for the skeet field. Just out of curiosity I had two shells left from the first load with felt in shot cup. Decided to try them, as it wasn’t cloudy in Texas today and it’s still there. So the only two things that were different out of the two loads was the felt and shot contamination.
Don’t know which to blame, but I have shot loads with felt before and no issues, maybe just the combination of that powder with the felt. |
