Handsome pup. I'm glad to see you found a way to get him home.

Thanks to all and I will keep you posted on his progress. He will be just short of 9 weeks at delivery and I believe Birch will be receptive to his nephew.

I am starting to refresh my training methods because it has been 6 years since I last trained a puppy, although I did help out with a couple of friends dogs. He will be my 12th hunting dog and rarely have they been close enough together to remember all the mistakes I make.

I have averaged a new pup every 4 years for the last 50 years. I used to think I was pretty good at training my dogs and then about 10 years ago I bought a puppy that grew into a tremendous handful. I ended up taking him to a pro I have known for close to 50 years and I got back a fabulous dog. However, he trains about 30 to 50 pups a year and took dozens of dogs to the nationals, so he sees every little nuance that we amateurs miss.

After the basics and when he becomes independent he is going to my friend. I trained Birch from start to finish after my friend trained the previous setter. Birch is great dog and handles all the commands and does very well on reserve birds, but I missed something in his bird training and he tends to crowd wild birds. I had read of this issue but in training 10 dogs myself I had never run into it, so I missed the signals.

Good Hunting,
Mike

Chicago,

Due your wild bird training 1st, especially training on Grouse. Then use the preserve birds to final finish. Planted birds will allow a pointing dog to get way to close and if used 1st for training, the pup will bump the wild Grouse who has a safety zone much bigger than any pen raised bird.

Good luck with your training

I grew up and hunted with my best friend "Rex" a setter that went everywhere with me in the woods. I was in jr high when I started so I was hunting anything that was in season at the time when we went out. He pointed rabbits, quail, turtle ( I didn't hunt them Smile ) and he even run around looking up in the trees when I was chasing a squirrel.Lots of fond memories of that dog. I love setters, just don;t see that many around here anymore. Well, you don't see that much bird hunting around here anymore except dove come to think about it.

Here is Cedar getting ready for his first visit to the training grounds at Bong Recreation Area in S.E. WI. We went up to work the other pup and he came along for the ride and a short walk. He seems bright and wants to please and, like many pups, at times is a Devil Dog.

Good Hunting,
Mike
