I took my AT-50 trailer to the conservation range yesterday to try my new Dickinson sidelock 12 ga on clay targets to verify my stock fitting work (it was a success), and saw a White Flyer box next to the trash can with hulls in the partitioned areas. A couple of the hull stashes were purple, which invited a closer look. Sure enough, about 100 Federal purple 16 ga hulls that appeared to be once fired and placed there for trash. There were also some Remington Game Load black hulls, but I've got a lifetime supply of those already. Anyone have any favorite recipes for the Federal hulls? I have the SG-16, Remington, Winchester and DR-16 wads to load with. I even have some Federal primers.

I've been doing 1 oz loads in my Cheddite and Rio hulls, It would be nice to get a 7/8 oz load that gave good crimps using the DR-16 wad, even a good 1 1/8 oz load would work as a pheasant load, anything other than another 1 oz load.

I use the DR wad, 7/8 ounce of shot, 15 grains of Green Dot for a nice light load.

No wad pressure

Mike

Mike, did you ever check the velocity on this load?

I wish I had more Federal hulls, this is all I would load for targets. I wouldn't be scared to swap in a DR16 wad.

Federal 2 3/4"
Federal 209A
16gr 700x
CB0078-16 wad
7/8 oz lead
OS card
fold crimp

MAP: 8,400 PSI
velocity- 1300 fps

Dave, no, but have shot 12 rounds of skeet with them in the last two weeks.
No lack of usefulness.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll try the DR-16 7/8 oz load. I have some 700X I've been using for 1 oz 12 ga loads that I can try to get around 1200 fps for skeet shooting. If that doesn't work, I'll get some Green dot to try.

Here is a nice 1 1/8 oz.load I have been using for years.

Federal 2 3/4" hull w/paper basewad
CCI209 Primer
23.0 grains 800-X
Remington SP-16 wad
1 1/8 oz. magnum shot

1277 FPS 9,800 PSI

___________________________________________________

......and a stout 7/8 oz. load developed to cycle a Remington 1100

Federal 2 3/4" hull w/paper basewad
Federal 209A Primer
22.0 Grains Universal
DR-16 Wad
7/8 oz. magnum lead

1384 FPS 10,800 PSI

You can drop this load down 2.0 grains with no issues, for break action and pump guns.

megasupermagnum,

I like the way that 16.0 grains of 700-X fits with the DR-16 wad.

The closest are once fired Federals.

The middle row are Winchester , made in Italy hulls, with 4 firings on them.

The last row are once fired Winchester/Cheddite hulls.

All fit nicely, tiny bit of wad pressure, just enough to seat the wad on the powder. All exhibit just a bit of concave, which I will not address. They loaded really nice on my 9000G. Crimp depth is .060" to .065" (thickness of a dime).

Might send these off to Mr. Armbrust, but not sure why. I will chronograph them soon.

Yeah, Mike, nice stuff. The RGL's crimp just about as well as anything. I have about 1,000 of them. Wish I had 10,000. I would get rid of all my other 16 ga. hulls.
