I've recently acquired a 1967 Sweet16 from my brother in law. I have discussed this gun here under various topics lately. This gun was only lightly used by him and he got it new in 1967 from his father. It still looks new. Anyway, my question is, do the recoil spring and action springs need to be replaced because they are 53 yrs old, or should they still be fine since the gun was so lightly used? Might be a stupid question but hey, I'm good at stupid questions! Very Happy

What ammo will you be using?

I would suggest setting the rings at HEAVY and then shooting
some Remington 1 ounce Game Loads through it and see how
the old girl functions.

Please report back on findings

Mike

Yeah, I've it set up for light loads, and I was shooting factory RGL in it and it seemed to kick like a rented mule.I have yet to shoot them with it set up for heavy load. I thought the 1oz RGL was supposed to be a "light" load. Smile I will shoot those, and that hull loaded with 7/8 oz #8 and DR16. It cycles the RGL 7/8 oz load fine, but won't cycle the same load in a cheddite 2 1/2in hull. I might take it north if I ever go back, for Phez, and shoot 11/8 oz Fiocci#5, but that won't be much.

Have you shot the gun yet? If it is cycling cleanly i would not change them out just for fun.

Cheap assurance for proper function. Make sure you do the one in the stock also. Use 30 weight oil on mag tube. Should have very light recoil with Remington gun clubs. If it has to much recoil your springs are worn out or you have to much/ wrong lube on magazine tube, or set up incorrectly. If I get another A5 I change springs and give good clean, before shooting. Then again I don’t have malfunctions either.

Sorry, I've been away. Yes, I've shot the gun. 1 box of RGL, and some reloads with 7/8 oz shot in the same hull. They cycle fine, even the 7/8 oz. I have the gun set up for light loads. I have tried 7/8 oz in a 21/2 in cheddite with the same 18gr PB that I use in the RGL 7/8 and they won't feed most of the time. I haven't tried the gun at all set up for heavy leads. As I said before, I thought of RGL as "light" loads. I have probably shot this gun as much as it was shot in it's whole prior life- which was almost not at all. I asked my original question not because I thought the springs could possibly be worn out, but I wondered if they might be not as "springy" from being in the gun for 53 yrs.

The recoil spring is exactly 8.5 in long. I don't have the correct tools to get to the action spring so I won't try. How long should it be?

Should be 8.6” for the recoil spring & 13.25 for the action spring

8.5 close enough. Think that spring is good to go. Unless you got some weird cycle issues I would go with it
