Seems lots of concerns about fast loads, 1440 FPS etc. I’ve used a Longshot in 12 ga loads for many years. I load by the manual, 1.25 ounces of shot at 1440 FPS.
I use magnum lead 6 or 5 shot.
I’ve never chronographed it or patterned that load.
However it is very deadly on wild pheasants.
I’ll use some this fall, when I’m not using a 16 ga. |

df,
It all depends on the quality of the guns, I do not use many 3" shells, my L.C. Smith double guns all have 2 3/4 or 2 9/16 chambers. Have a couple modern guns with 3" chambers however. I always recommend staying with the loads the manufacturer advised at purchase. I do pattern all my guns for Grouse and Woodcock hunting, I found long ago the pattern is way more important than the actual speed of the shells. I purchase shells that hold a repetitive pattern. Sold my MEC years ago.

Used Longshot in my 16ga loads for years...load to at least 1300fps, have had some tested and that velocity is pretty much spot on (some little bit faster but not much) These are 1 1/16oz loads.
Have used in 12ga too, up to 1400 but ones I settled on about 1350 or so and are 1 1/8oz loads.
The longshot loads were all very consistent as well.
But don't load much for 12ga anymore, |

I can think of very few birds I've ever not killed because my load wasn't fast enough... |
