Interesting thread about the BTFE; which were offered on single barrel trap guns as early as 1895
https://www.trapshooters.com/threads/history-of-the-beavertail-forend.845035/

Hunter Arms did not offer a BTFE until 1920, and Dave's “Skeet Style” BTFE was introduced on the Skeet Special in 1929.

A Research Letter might document the original specs of the gun.

Gentlemen,

No matter what terminology you use to describe the documents Bill Brophy saved from being destroyed in the garbage, they are not complete. This is one of the reasons you should never say never when talking about the guns Hunter Arms actually made and delivered to their clients.

We owe a great debt to LTC Brophy. By simply checking our SNs with Cody or the LCSCA (and sending a few $s Wink ) we can confirm the original specs of a L.C. Smith, which is of particular value when considering the purchase of what appears to be a rare, unusual, or high grade gun.

RevDocDrew,

Absolutely without Col Brophy retrieving the documents none of this SN identification would have been possible, and lots of SN and sales facts about L.C. Smith Hunter Arms would have been distroyed, and our L.C. Smith guns would have ended up like the Ithaca Gun Companies, with hardly any documented SN and traceability.

Many people have never read or even seen the Parts and Specifications book he wrote, that lists every part and spec for all L.C. Smith guns. Another wealth of factual documented information thanks to Col Bill Brophy.

The 1920s were a swell decade.....lot of nice scatterguns sold, birddogs birthed and trees cut.
Never a need to back away from swell.

tramroad28,

Not being born in the 20's I have to rely on my Father and Grandfathers teachings of that era, hunting and fishing were very good. My Grandmother tells incredible stories of the wild young ladies of the 20's, of with she was one. The 60's ladies had nothing on the 20's ladies from what I understand.

Lots of good dogs including George Rymans Pa Grouse dogs, long before the modern breeders were ever thought of. I still hunt with some of his breed line even today. Genetically watered down but still great Grouse dogs. Having owned the dogs he bred I know the dogs well.

The forest were great and in different stages of growth, making for Grouse habitat that has been unequaled. It must have been incredible Grouse and Woodcock hunting here in Pa. I was told Deer and Turkey were secondary hunting in that era, everyone hunted Grouse and there were plenty to hunt.
