So I have a recipe for 2-1/2” Cheddites that I just set up and the first two are almost perfect. It’s 20.5 gns of Universal, SG16 wad, and 1 oz of shot. I was loading 19.9 gns of Universal with the SG wad and 7/8 oz of shot. Those I thought were about perfect, crimp wise. Without changing anything other than the charge bar to 1 oz and going from a 26 bushing to a 27 they are about perfect though the sides of the hulls show some dimples from the shot poking against the plastic. Crimps are perfect. Am I over thinking it? Or am I cramming 10 lbs of crap into a 5 lb bag? I would think that if there wasn’t enough room the Hull would collapse or just not crimp well. I’m loading them with nickel 7’s from Precision. The others were 7-1/2’s. I just can’t believe that going up in powder and shot size that I’m getting such a nice load. Sound right?

The load that you mention should be fine. That is exactly what I load in my 21/2" loads except that I roll crimp mine.

Thanks Byron. Should be hell on the ruffs if I do my part. One week from tomorrow I leave for a 4-5 day hunt. I can’t wait.

Where you going on your trip? I have used that 7/8 oz load with good success--I may try the 1 oz load. #7's work really good on grouse--fewer cripples, and have shot alot of pheasant with 7's also.
Good luck, and have fun on your trip.

Heading to upstate NY. I’m a big fan of 6’s. I never really had much confidence in 7-1/2’s. I think the 7’s are perfect for earlier in the season but I still back the first barrel up with copper plated RST 6’s in the second barrel. I’ve had incredible success with nickel but don’t have much experience with the copper, but have always backed it up with regular 6’s.
