Gentlemen, My 6 year old buddy Cooper developed allergies several years ago. Usually in spring and summer. I'm the past a few dry spots that he bites at and scratches where he can. This year it is worse and we have tried what we can to help him out. The latest is a series of injections, Allercept, after he was tested and seemed to be allergic to just about everything. He has been on them for over a month and a half and they don't seem to be helping at all. We tried a different food last year too, we currently use Purina Pro plan sport. Any thoughts? Joe

Check this stuff out. They say it works very well but a few dogs can be allergic to it but that’s the case with many things. This is supposed to alleviate a lot of allergy problems in dogs. May be worth a shot.

All our setters (genetically unrelated) had allergic dermatitis, which was controlled with:
A salmon and rice diet (also usually lower in fat which helps prevent pancreatitis). Definitely get off corn and chicken (usually parts which are very allergenic). It may require limited wheat/gluten also.
OTC cetirizine
OTC Malaseb shampoo baths weekly. Do let it sit for 10 min. before rinsing.
One had doggie impetigo (a secondary infection from the dermatitis) requiring occasional 3 day courses of Augmentin/Clavamox.

My sympathy for you and your dog. The allergy tests can be useful...but not foolproof. After sensitisation to one or a few allergens then there can be cross-reactivity to subsidiary ones. The desensitisation course may be helpful but there is likely to be several factors involved in the dog's problem.
1. Change diet - go natural. Raw tripe, rice or oats, and vegetables. Omega 3 oils optional.
2. Change of environment usually not possible or practical, so pay attention to minimising potential irritants in the home and garden. House/kennel dust mite is one of the most frequent problems.
3. Regular worming with a broad - spectrum vermifuge which includes anti-flea and mite specificity.
4. A course of oral Prednisolone to suppress the dog's immune response and reactivity.
5.Habitual licking and chewing - try and divert dog to some sort of mental activity and raw bones to chew.
Best of luck to you both.

Go to your Vet and ask them about a drug called Apoquel. It is a little pricey but we had a dog that was allergic to a number of different things including, wool, dust mites, storage mites, red clover, cottonwood, grain smut, corn pollen and 8 other environmental substances. We took him to a Vet dermatologist to figure all that out. We gave him both the shots and the Apoquel and that pretty much cleared up the issue. If we tried to drop either the shots or the Apoquel he would start biting and scratching again. He would literally pull his hair out before we got it under control. The dermatologist would make up the concoction and we gave him the shots every two weeks and one pill per day.

Good Hunting,
Mike

Thanks we are going to switch his food and most likely try the combo of shots and the Apoquel. He was on that before , I'll let you know what transpires. The Maleseb baths seem to help too. So we will keep on doing that. Joe
