I picked up my 4 1/2 month old GSP pup, Dan, from the trainer on Saturday where he was exposed to birds, gunfire and the training collar over a two week session. I took all three dogs over to Spring River Hunts in Kansas this morning for my first hunt with little Dan, with express instructions from the trainer to just let the pup be a pup and no check cords, stimulations or heavy handed control. I'm overwhelmed at what I saw. He was steady on point, backing naturally and retrieving to hand and that little sucker was hitting the quail scent as far out as the big dogs, quite often even better. This may be the easiest pup I've ever trained.
The last bird of the morning was a little bobwhite rooster that had escaped into heavy broom sage by flying low over the dog. Rebel on point, Bode backing in background, and Dan backing on the right. 16 ga TriStar Brittany ready for revenge.
Dan the pup and his "I love me" picture. Can't imagine the whole morning going any better. |

Riflemeister,
So glad to hear that Dan is joy to hunt with.
To all the others posting,
It looks like folks either had or continue to have good seasons. It is always a pleasure to see photos of the coverts, the pups (I call them all pups) and fine guns. It doesn’t hurt that we had some success to reward the pups hard work.
Enjoy and Good Hunting,
Mike |

Got my goal buck for the year and the biggest I've ever killed, 225 dressed weight. I was sick last gun season and had to hunt out of a ground blind. I was off my chair and coughing into a pile of leaves on the ground to muffle my cough got back on the chair and got a glimpse of a huge body deer but that was it he was gone. Been sick over that the past year.
I've had him on camera last three years this was the first time I have really had a chance at him. |
