Dave, glad you are having so many contacts in Pa. From the reports I've been getting form people that hunt Maine they are having a good year there as well on grouse not so much on woodcock. Although I look forward to South Dakota every year I may do a Maine trip instead. Have 11 months to decide. Joe

Sharing a couple pics from hunts over the past few weeks.

1st is Scout with a couple CA quail we took in an upland restoration area. Nice work by the dog to find the birds as they were in close to a creek and the cover was thick. Shot these with the FOX SW and some old paper 8s.

2nd is a Bird I will remember forever (I hope). I took both dogs today (Scout 3, Dash 11) as I was hoping that Dash had a little left in his tank to point a bird for my son Karsten. Indeed he did. Really solid point. Both son and I shot at the bird and we were glad to take it. Pictures of him and the dogs, me and the dogs and a fun one of a hill that Karsten climbed, just because. I love to see the peace of the outdoors inspire "just because". See if you can find him!

3rd is a hunt this morning. Really windy day in the Palouse, temps in the low 40s. Dog made a great point and I followed my hunter with a solid shot with the Merkel. I never really can take stylish pics like some of the guys on this board, and then Scout bailed me out. Can't make him do that! Wink Couple of selfies just to remind me what I looked like 20-30 years from now.

Had a fantastic day yesterday. Managed to bother some quail with my damascus Husky mod.15 16b hammer gun for the first time. Trying to reload quickly with the underlever Husky, when the covey is busting out and birds are buzzing everywhere, is a real hoot. Definitely more challenging than with a hammerless gun, yet very rewarding in a quixotic, contrarian sort of way.

My setter Briar, who will be 12 next June, had a great time, but he wasn't able to go for very long in the thick, heavy cover.

Later in the day, I also connected on a big wild rooster with my H&H 16. They had been busting wild all morning, so it felt great to finally get a close, pointed flush.

The long drive home always seems a bit shorter when you've had a successful day.

This weekend I'll be chasing chukars again. Can't wait!

Thanks Mike. Every day we can do these things is a blessing, for sure. Very Happy

My biggest deer yet taken during the first day of the Illinois November firearm season. Also the first kill with my recently purchased 1960 Browning sweet 16. Used Brenneke classic magnum slugs.

Uncle Dan,

Glad to see another Bird hunter with a real nice 16 gauge Hammer Gun. With a little more practice you will get the reloading down smoothly to down another bird. Congrats on a fine Hammer Gun/hunt!

all the best,

Really nice buck, and a sweet gun! Whitetail with a vintage 16ga, well done!

We had a superb hunting season in South Dakota. Nice weather with high numbers of birds. Dogs had a blast!
