Does anyone have a Drams Equivalent chart for the 16 gauge? I have one for the 12 gauge already, but really want one tailored to the 16. Thanks in advance. |

The only info I have as follows:
2 1/2 drams = 1 oz. @ 1165 FPS
2 3/4 drams = 1 1/8 oz. @ 1185 FPS
3 dram = 1 1/8 oz. @ 1240 FPS
3 1/4 dram = 1 1/8 oz. @ 1295 FPS
3 1/4 dram = 1 1/4 oz. @ 1260 FPS
The above are dram equivalents from known factory loads. |

Gahhh... I hope no one is going to resurrect that labelling convention lol. The worst most confusing least useful units in the history of capitalism... was soooo glad when it died off
Good chart to have if you have an old box of ammo and wonder what speed it is though! |

You know me Dave, I am a nerd and weird on top of that when it comes to older or vintage shotgun stuff. I have a ton of old boxes with no velocity on them other than drams eq. So I am just curious.
My Dad likes screaming fast lead loads, and always wondered what drams his loads were compared to. He’s is approaching 70 so he still uses the drams as a reference on everything. I do not personally need a 1 1/8 ounce 12 gauge load going 1530fps, but he loves them. I am a purist i guess my lead loads don’t go over 1300fps. My steel loads around 1350-1500, and my bismuth loads are right along with lead velocity. |

skeettx,
I knew there was another 1 oz. load out there, because it is on the SAAMI website but, it doesn't tell you the dram equivalent!!
Thanks for filling in the blank!

Dave In AZ,
Gonna take a wild guess that you don't like dram equivalents???
But "The worst most confusing least useful units in the history of capitalism"?? Nah not by a long shot!!
The worst, most confusing, least useful units in the history of capitalism are politicians. |

LOL, politicians. Good one.
When I first started reloading for 16 and 28ga, back in 1991 I guess, everything was still labeled with Dram Equivalents, and almost nothing had any actual speeds on the box. So I built this color coded chart for 12, 16, 20, 28ga loads showing what size loads at what DE could be loaded... my first reloading data analysis heh. I've still got it sitting in the front of my reloading binder.
It wasn't all that long ago really, 29 years, but I remember that in Del Rio, Texas, I could walk into any store-- KMart, WalMart, hardware, sports-- and find stacks and stacks of 16ga dove and game loads. Always as much as they had 20ga at least! My impression back then was that the 16ga was as popular as the 20ga, which is what I wanted since my only shotguns were my Grandfather's guns-- a 16ga Model 12, and a Remington 11-48 28ga. I was wrong, but that was the impression I had based on how available ammo was for the 16 back then, in Texas. So I made all these DE and loads-available charts, to convince myself that I had everything covered with 16 and 28 ga, and I didn't need a 12 or 20ga! And for 21 years, that's all I used.
Mike/SkeetTX, what were you doing in the USAF in 1991-95? I was in west TX driving around shooting dove in Del Rio, Midland, Odessa, and San Angelo a bit. Rarely got thru Amarillo, and then only when driving to NM for skiing, but I do recall seeing pronghorn out there. |

Dave In Az,
I started shooting and reloading in 1974 and everything was in DE. I got used to it so I never really had any issues with DE.
It has always been fairly useless, and I don't know why the US companies still reload to those velocity levels.
It's 2020......Kinda well past the expiration date, don't ya think?
But it is part of the history of shotshells, so even though useless it does fill in some of the blanks.

I was exploring a new sharptail area the other day and on my way I drove past 8 nice pronghorn laying down in the wheat stubble.......still haven't seen any moose or mule deer. |
