Could not source a 16 870 so i made my own . Lucked out on a cheap barrel that was cut off and installed a 16 Lyman choke and tube set I had kicking around . Had a old 12 gauge receiver and stock set and trigger group . Installed a 16 gauge ejector , left and right shell latches a 16 bolt works great . Anyone done this conversion ? |

No, but always heard the 16 gauges were built on a 12 gauge frame. Makes no sense. So, yours shouldn’t be that much different than original. |

No, but I had a very early Model 870 16 that broke 6 3/8# by only a wee bit....weight, overrated so many times, may not be an element delivered by your choices.
However, I suppose success all boils down to what one is searching for....what is your desire for your new gun?
Frame size appears the normal question in many instances with the 16 but I suspect the weight savings of those wonderful early 870 16s was mostly in the barrels and the wood....not to mention no rib.
Good luck in achieving satisfaction. |

The 16 conversion came in at 6.9lb my model 37 weighs 6.3 my model 12 comes in at 6.12 all with 28inch no rib my Grand Lightening comes in at 7.1lbs all are well balanced for me. I can live with these weights getting to old to walk to far anyways and am blessed to be able to hunt out of my back door. |

It’s the opposite. 12 gauge 870s are built on a 16 gauge frame. |

when I got one to mess with a few yrs ago , had a 12ga trap stock and FE i wanted on the gun for trap . The FE was glassed onto the metal and there was just enough fitting involved that the 12ga iron would not let the 16ga gun go off . VERY CLOSE , but no cigar !! |

If you're really interested in a light 870 16, look into the gun that spawned the 870. The Model 31L in 16 trips the scales in the 5 1/2 lb range and has identical geometry to the later gun. |
