I have always be intrigued by the german side lock over and under shotguns. What can you tell me about them? Who makes a good entry level option? I know that Simson, Merkel, and possibly Sauer made them? Any other makers to consider?
Do they all have ejectors, extractors. What should I be aware of? Are they all good quality?
What price range would I be expecting to find a 16 gauge in nice condition selling for? |

Those are fairly rare around here. A few of us have had non-sidelock German OU's, I've had 5 myself, 4 Merkels and I guess one was a Belgian, but I can't speak to the sidelocks. In general I'd be confident in the quality of the makers you mentioned. |

I have a pre war Sauer SxS sidelock. Not a 16 but very light 12. Love it and the locks are beautifully made. |

I wonder how many of the German O/U sidelocks are actually sideplate guns. Virtually all modern O/Us today are boxlocks. Sidelocks were originally made for SxS and make little sense for O/Us because the hammer layout is not symmetrical. Check them over closely if they claim to be sidelocks.

Merkel really made their name post-war with their O/U guns.
If O/Us are what float your boat, it's hard to go wrong with any of the German O/U guns. |

I just recently picked up a Merkel 201E.
It's a box lock, mid-grade that has ejectors, cocking indicators, Kersten action, and Blitz locks.
It also has sling swivels and a Monte Carlo stock characteristic of German shotguns.
At 6.4lbs it is a sweet gun to carry.
I've been lurking at various websites hoping to get an O/U, and it took close to 15 years.
The manufacturers that you listed are pretty solid... other than engraving you'll find the Suhl guns to be virtually identical.
Good luck, |
