Variations in wood density would be my guess for the extra few ounces.

Wyochukar,

Garhart what you say is absolutely true, the better the grade of wood on a good gun the heavier the gun usually becomes. I do have a couple 20 gauge L.C. Smith 00 guns that are just over 6 Lbs. I have one special order pre 13, 20 gauge that weighs well under 6 Lbs with 26" Barrels. We also have a 1926 L.C. Smith 20 gauge with the cheaper American Walnut wood and even with the small beaver tail fore-end it weighs less than 6 lbs.

The wood can change the gun weight more than just a little bit.

all the best,

1926 Field Grade 20 gauge L.C. Smith under, modern L.C. Smith 28 gauge on top, the 28 gauge weighs 3/4 of a Lb more than the original 20 gauge, because of the density of the wood and slightly different frames. Both guns have 26" barrels. The American Classic is a true side lock, the modern 28 gauge is a Box Lock with side plates.
