Life is strange, and kind of cool. I like old hunting books and recently bought a used copy of Burton Spiller's "More Grouse Feathers". As is customary, I produced a feather to use as a bookmark, a ruffed grouse tail feather of course since this is a Spiller book.

As I began reading the book I discover, about 1/3 of the way through the book...another grouse tail feather! Not only is this neat that a previous owner also used such a bookmark but it got me to thinking. Didn't these books come with a complimentary grouse tail feather taped inside the cover? If so, this could be it.

My tail feather is the one on the right, the other that came in the book is on the left.

WyoChukar,

Garhart man you are talking my language now, I have the original Grouse Feathers book given to my father by Spiller, they were friends and traded roses for their rose gardens. My fathers book has a Grouse feather in it, my copy of More Grouse Feathers I had to put one of my own Grouse feathers in as a page marker.

Collect all the Spillers Grouse books, they are great, my favorite is Drummer in the Woods.

Thanks for the memories,

I still have a Franklin Planner that I use and they have this plastic page turner that you can put something inside of. My divider has a grouse tail feather from about 30 years ago and a woodcock feather of the same era. Whenever I think I have a good tail I compare the length to the one in my divider. So far the divider wins.

Good Hunting,
Mike

Can't say as I've found a grouse feather in a used book yet, but the "library" here has a lot of interesting traditional book markers. For what its worth, I have included a grouse tail feather in most of my quail books I've sold on Amazon. There's just not a suitable bobwhite feather for a bookmark, not even a drab gray primary wing feather! Grouse tail feather, now that's a different story!

Dave, so far I have: Grouse Feathers, More Grouse Feathers, Grouse Feathers Again, and Drummer in The Woods. I really love Drummer in the Woods. The 2nd and 3rd Grouse Feathers books are recent purchases. I will probably finish "More" tomorrow and then move on to "Again". Thus far, my favorite Spiller story, hands down, is "Red Letter Day".

4setters, I hear you on the quail feathers. I do have a Gambels tail feather in use right now, but it is a tad small. Himalayan Snowcock feathers make great bookmarks. There are plenty of large feathers on those. Maybe someday when I finish writing a book I will include one in the first 100 or so copies.

WyoChukar,

Garhart make sure you include me on your book list when you decide to publish. Just let me know where to send my purchase money. I really enjoy your writing!

I will put the book on the shelf with my Spiller and GBE books that also have book mark Grouse feathers, in my permanent home sports library.

Love to have a Snow Cock feather and some more good writing.

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave

WyoChukar,

Garhart I have a lot of great Upland hunting books in my sports library. I thought you might like Dennis Walrods book, Grouse Hunter's Guide. A book of solid facts, insights and observations on how to hunt Ruffed Grouse.

Simply a great book and Dennis does not get the credit he should for writing it, I highly recommend reading it, a very different educational type sporting book.

all the beat,

Notice the Grouse Feather page book marker!

Herbert L. Stoddard a naturalist, biologist, ornithologist and author wrote the first book on quail management 90 yeas ago. He was a friend and colleague of Aldo Leopold. Leopold stated that it was Stoddard who introduced game management procedures based on research. A late friend who corresponded with Stoddard told me that in each of Stoddard's letters to him there was enclosed a gobbler's breast feather. Gil
