The First Hunt Foundation is a great source of information and mentored hunts. You may want to have your friend contact them- they may even set-up a guided hunt for him. As for shot in a 20 ga I would go with one of the 1 1/4oz loads of #5 or 6 shot.

IMO, the first load to start with would be Winchester Longbeards, if you can find them. Aside from those, any 1 oz to 1 1/4 oz load of 6s that patterns well at 30yds. Stay away from high-speed lead loads (say 1300fps+) as they tend to blow patterns, IME. Patterning is a must.

If the gun can handle steel shot , then TSS is the best by far.

TSS or Longbeard. In that order.

If a 20 gauge, a 2.75” shell with 1 1/8 ounces of six or five shot, or 3” shell with 1 1/4 ounces of the same size shot will work well. And I’d use a full choke.

If you could guarantee that all birds would present you with 30 yard or closer shots, any load that patterns densely at 30 yards is fine. Finding a load that has the ability to cleanly kill at forty yards is the difficult part. Reno
