Cold Iron, I think your suspicion is right. I probably had been piercing primers (barely) and not noticing until the issue became more pronounced. We stoned the firing pins and now it’s no longer a problem. But, I’d prefer to not go back to using the Ched 209’s in these two guns so as not to get back into the same situation. I’ve looked through the Hodgdon data as well as the spread sheets from the low pressure group and am not finding a similar load (Ched hulls & DR16) to my “go to” load that I listed above that uses a different primer. I did have some CCI 209’s so I loaded up a few and tried them. No piercing at all.
Has anyone substituted these primers for the Cheds? Pressures?
I’m not concerned about my 2 3/4” guns but I like to keep the pressure between 6K-7K on my older short chambered 16’s. |
