I've tried out 3 different powders in new (to me) loads and one seemed to heat up the gun barrel faster than the other two while shooting Skeet. Especially noticed because the one that most quickly got the barrel uncomfortable to touch was the first box of the day. I had assumed within the narrow pressure and velocity ranges of shotshells that this would not be an issue, but don't claim to know it all.

Yes, Black powder will heat up barrels

I also find slower burning powders will also affect barrel heating

.410s get really hot during a round of skeet/clays

Limiting the experience to .410s, have you noticed a difference between 296/H110, Lil'Gun, Alliant 410, any other suitable powder? I have no experience loading .410 and the range of powders is pretty small but they could still show barrel heating differences. In searching the web I find people observing differences in hull life based on powder choice so that is a noticeable effect for them.

How about for other gauges (primarily 16ga)? Shot charge and velocity being roughly equal, have you found any particular powder to heat up a barrel faster than others?

Short answer, yes.

Long answer the relative difference in barrel warming by various smokeless powders is not significant enough to occupy much concern.

While a thermometer can show a measurable barrel temperature difference at the end of 25 shotshells on a skeet range, I doubt if your hand to the touch could discern the measure enough for it to matter.

It can. A longer burn cycle/ flame duration will transfer more heat. If the barrel is to hot to touch, keep fingers away from it. Beyond that I wouldn't be too worried about it.
