I always allow myself two shots on a covey, or two shots per flush on singles. If I miss the two, the bird wins and I move on. On a covey, if I double, I might or might not hunt up the singles depending on the size of the covey. Small ones are left alone to recover. Either way, I have no preference for extractors or ejectors as long as either lift the shell high enough for easy removal. I'm in no rush.
One other point. A hurried follow up shot in the heat of the moment is often missed. Even worse if the gun has been emptied and reloaded in haste. Better to calm down and focus on the next shot. I'm out to relax and enjoy the day, watch trhe dog work, and poke around. I'm not on a mission anymore. Age has its privleges and its insights. |
