I am tying to find a few reloading recipes for bismuth shot using a wad other than a Remington SP16 wad. This is for a 2-9/16 chamber Auto 5. I would like to use the following components but am flexible.
Hull: Cheddite 2-1/2 inch or the black Remington hulls
Primers: Cheddite, Winchester or Federal
Powder: Green Dot, Blue Dot, Steel, American Select or Clays
Shot weight: 7/8 to 1-1/8 ounce
I saw that BPI has a few wads and Grafs had the WAA16 wad.
Thank you!! |

Is it a matter of not liking the SP16 or can't obtain any?
This guy has some available.....

My method for load development was this: Find a 1oz 2 3\4" lead load recipe. Substitute 7 /8 oz of bismuth shot in place of 1 oz lead, and use a roll crimped 2 1\2" in place of 2 3 /4 fold crimp. Then test for velocity (and consistency) and patterns. Then send in to test PSI. |

makintrax73,
A bit of insight.
I am guessing that you wanted a "low pressure" load?
The load you have posted might be difficult to get more consistent. However a primer change only is where I would start. Changing the hull along with the primer means 2 variables, if you fix it or not you will not know which helped.
Fiocchi primers were designed to ignite single base powder. Unique (double based) being used for the load you have, has a tendency to be inefficient. You mentioned Cheddite primers, that is a good possibility, as are Winchester 209's and Federal 209A's.
IMHO I would go right to the Winchester 209.
I know the primer size is different and the Winchesters might be loose. There is a tool to fix that, both Precision Reloading and BPI have the tool. |
