The discussion below on the Winchester M12 and the enjoyment of good “quality” made me think of asking the group the following:
What do you pay more for, or relish coming across, based on the perceived quality of the item or service?
My guess is that most if not all of us here are bent the same way, in many ways. Certainly in the concepts of fair chase; affinity for authenticity; ethics; more.
Just for starters, beyond the obvious (for this site) in firearms, dogs, etc., I like:
Nicolson, and Heller (made in USA) files
Coleman stoves and lanterns (made in Wichita)
Gransfors Bruks axes/hatchets
Old Mec 600 Jr.s
Williams wrenches
Cee Tee or John Deere pliers
Angel’s Envy Rye whiskey (admittedly a personal taste)
Haviland china
Hamley saddles in decent shape
Griswold cast iron (and Lodge, for that matter)

A couple more, just because I just thought of them:
The Filson wide-brim “packer?” hat
The MSR Whisperlite stove
Wellco USMC “RAT” boots
The old “ALICE” pack

I got one of those Barbour "Beaufort" coats - the waterproofed ones that kinda smell funny and are absolutely The Bomb for misty, wet drizzly days.
I still have the ALICE (large) I bought from Clothing Sales. Ditto a pair of 40 y/o Corcorans.

All good stuff.
Have never bought a Barbour coat, but +1 on the D5A gloves and Corcorans.
As an aside, if you ever wondered as I have why it costs almost as much to resole a pair of jump boots as it does to buy a new pair, you’ll enjoy this video...

Well I've got to admit. I was never privledge enough to have any of what you say. Must be why I always froze my ass off over marshes, feet getting froze hunting rabbits in snow covered ground, but me old mod 12-16ga never ever fails me for good times. Along with a few greman shorthairs. |

LOL - Hammer Bill, I’m right there with you. MOST of the stuff above I’ve picked up over the years at garage sales, flea markets, or estate sales. That’s the thing, about quality stuff, for me: like your M12, it doesn’t wear out. And if it does break down a little, more often than not, it can be fixed instead of thrown away. I guess that’s why I like the old stuff.
And I’ll second your Shorthairs. Pretty much my all-time best friend, Jake, was a guy of that persuasion who lived 16 years before dying on Christmas Day 2016. And he had more miles left in him, yet...

Herters foam decoys. I love the 72’s for divers. Can’t beat the durability and simplicity. I enjoyed being able to repaint my decoys every other season or so. |

Gentlemen,
It does seem like much of the sporting goods today is not built as well as in our Fathers and Grandfathers era, fortunately there are still quality Classic American and Euro double guns to be purchased thru GI and other places.
all the best,

I believe that many of the hunting items today are better than they have ever been. However not all are made here in the USA, but we only have ourselves (as a society) to blame for that.
Boots, stay dry, warm, are lighter and last longer than ever. Clothes are warmer, thinner and therefore less bulky to shoot in when the weather turns cold. Shotguns can be had in any style/weight/action/gauge/barrel length that floats your boat. The actions are less troublesome and finicky at least on quality firearms and in my experience, than ever. Ammo is also better than ever, though in short supply for the time being. Shooting glasses are much better. Hearing protection is better whether electronic or not. Dog kennels and training accessories are much better than voice commands (yelling LOL and don't even try to convince me you haven't yelled for a dog at some point in your hunting career), whistles and bells.
I can't think of any QUALITY item that is available now that isn't better than the old stuff.
Not saying that the older items aren't/weren't well made, and that they aren't still very effective, just saying that the world has advanced in technology and so haven't the items that we use for hunting.
Now whether you choose to use the new stuff is your option, but the options are out there. |
