Just on a whim I want to try an 1100 fps 1 1/8 oz load of 5's in my AyA. Does anyone have a recipe they like for this type of load?

I see a potential load I could work with using Herco on the spread sheets. It's a Remington hull, SP16, Herco 16.5 gr., Fed 209A showing 1117 fps @ 10,200 psi. (Lyman 3rd)

Don't have it in front of me, but I use Remington SP16 Wads, Winchester 209 primers and Long Shot for my 1 1/8 ounce 16 gauge loads for skeet. Think there are about 1,100 to 1,150 FPS.

Bob, I've considered Longshot. I just don't know how far you can crank it down and get decent cold weather performance. This whole thing is just a whim to try Ron Forsyth's "low velocity principle."

I’m not where I can access my load data, but I use Longshot, win 209, SP16. Don’t remember what hull, and I believe it’s around 1300 FPS. Great pheasant load.

Here's one from Precision Reloading that I'm going to work down to 1100 fps.

Federal hull
Fed 209A
Z16
19.0 gr. Unique
1195 fps @ 10,640 psi

I'll clock 18.0 and 17.5 gr. and see where it is when I pattern my short loads tomorrow.

double,

Before I saw your last post I headed to look at Unique as I have downloaded it in 20ga for the wife and kids and it worked nicely. A bit dirty, but it works.

Thanks, Ham.

I'm really curious to see how it does. Green Dot is also on my radar, but I'll work with Unique first. Hope to have preliminary results today.

Hi Dave ,

I was going to mention Green Dot , I think you will get better consistency and a cleaner burn with it .

Isn't a 1/1/8oz Green dot load in a Precisions old manual.

Mark, we do think alike, and Green Dot would seem to be a better powder for this. There are these two listed in the PR manual.

1 1/8 oz lead
Federal hull
W209
Green Dot 16.8
Z16
1207 fps
9510 psi

1 1/8 oz lead (7-1/2 or smaller)
Remington hull
W209
Z16
Green Dot 15.7
1208 fps 11,240 psi

There must be a stack height issue on the 2nd load because they specify "7-1/2 or smaller."

The following load is the one I'm working with. Stack height is perfect. You make the call!

1 1/8 oz lead
Fed 209A
Z16
Unique 19.0
1195 fps
10,640 psi

Why is 1,100 FPS so important? Trying for lower recoil, you do you need an extra inch of lead for some reason! Laughing

I have long wanted to try Ron Forsyth's low velocity principle. Another reason is I want to tighten up my open-choked right barrel on my AyA for times I want to carry it after pheasants after midseason. Another is, yes, I do want to reduce the recoil on myself and the gun. I have no idea how things will play out, but why does it matter to you? What do you mean by "you do you need an extra inch of lead?"

Some numbers to ponder.

Recoil was calculated using a 6.25 lb. shotgun. (the weight of my AyA)

1 1/8 oz. #5 1108 fps Recoil 22.5 ft. lbs. Retained energy at 40 yards 2.12 ft. lbs.

1 oz. #6 1260 fps Recoil 23.3 ft. lbs. Retained energy at 40 yards 1.96 ft. lbs.

1 1/8 oz. #6 1295 fps Recoil 29.7 ft. lbs. Retained energy at 40 yards 2.02 ft. lbs. (typical 1 1/8 oz. factory load)

Like I said, I'm just messing with this low velocity load. Might work out, might not.

The Unique load may work out perfectly , just thinking for consistency and cold weather performance the GD may be better .

Looking forward to seeing the result.

I took the following Precision Reloading load and dropped the power to 17.5 and 18.0 grains. I tested 2 rounds because I'm just looking to get close to 1100 fps. I got 1091 and 1042 fps respectively.

1 1/8 oz lead
Federal hull
Fed 209A
Z16
Unique 19.0
1195 fps
10,640 psi

---------------

I decided to try a couple of the Green Dot loads from the Precision Reloading load below. I dropped the charge to 15 and 15.5 grains. They went 993 and 1028 fps.

1 1/8 oz lead
Federal hull
W209
Green Dot 16.8
Z16
1207 fps
9510 psi

So, I'll work it up to 1100 fps and see which powder is the most consistent. Then I'll pattern it.

I agree with you on that. If they are similar in the end I'll most likely go with Green Dot.
