I had a neighbor who had a small ridgeback named Lulu. She was exuberant and vocal.

They got a bark collar but couldn't bear the idea of shocking Lulu, sweet thing she was. So the one they got would spray a little citronella if the dog started barking. Dogs apparently cannot stand that smell.

Long story short, it took Lulu a little while but she figured out just how loud she could be without setting off the spray. And she kept on barking, but more softly.

There was another neighbor with a real howler of a beagle. They lived in an upstairs apartment. I used to walk the dog first thing in the morning - 0600 or thereabouts. You know how somehow dogs know there's another canine or prey in the area. We'd walk past that building and, when we got within 50 yards, that beagle would start howling until we'd gotten that far past. Regular alarm clock....
