Gentlemen,

Unfortunately it has been a bust of an opening day 2021, for Grouse & Woodcock here on the northern tier of Pa. Heavy rain all day long so far, making it impossible to Grouse and Woodcock hunt in any real way. Forecast has it raining until late this evening after dark.

Looks like our real opening day will be Monday the 18th of October, if the rain has dissipated by then.

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave

Dreaming of better opening days.

Wished we had some moisture here in Idaho! Today was opening day for pheasants and my dog and I got 3 birds. However the black lab was dragging ass on the way back to the truck. 70+ degrees after about noon.
Beautiful day though.

I managed to get out for an hour and a half in McKean County.
The dog flushed two grouse and I missed both.
Tough shooting when your glasses are fogged up and covered in rain, that's my excuse anyway.

grouse_Fan,

It did not quit raining here on our mountains until almost 5:00 PM, took a short walk out back with the 28 gauge CZ Bob White double gun on our own properties. Only saw 1 very young Grouse and did not shoot at it. No Woodcock right now, which is surprising here on our land. Shadow and Maggie Mae both locked up on the young Grouse with Maggie doing a real nice backing job. It was dark by the time I walked back to the log cabin.

Got to be one of the most rainy opening days we have ever had, I do like it wet in the Grouse woods, Monday should be nice in the wet woods.

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave

the saga is the same 50mis north of you Dave . Fields have lakes of water and it just continues . Should be seeing some Wood Cocks around soon - still no drumming !

16gaDavis,

Very strange Woodcock season here no doubt about it. It seems the flight is late this year, must have been warm up north for longer period of time.

all the best,

Dave

The flight birds have reached SE Wisconsin. My daughter and her young short hair put out two in Racine County (SW of Milwaukee) on Sat. While pheasant hunting.

Hot and dry here. 70s. Too cool off Friday.

Swampy16,

My answering system is not working correctly right now, somebody hacked our phone system. Use the E-mail pine-creek@live.com or the PM here on the forum to message me.

Grouse real spooky right now can't get near enough to them to knock one down. No Woodcock flight yet either. Touch hunting right now even with good dogs.

all the best,

Pine Creek/Dave

Sorry to hear your opener was washed out, but it should make the next hunt better. I always like to get out just after a rain because both the dog and I make less noise.
Good Hunting,
Mike

My PA opener was also grim & soggy, but we did put in a full day. 1 point, 1 flush, 0 shot opportunities (grouse got up behind a big pine). Then the sky opened up. Hunted briefly Monday morning for 2 hours, moved a couple birds out of the treetops, and finally re-flushed them, but they wouldn't hold for the dog (or he didn't scent them). Tough in all this greenery, esp. for a young dog. Then I plowed into a big six-point on the way to the next cover & destroyed my radiator! So my hunting vehicle is out of commission for awhile. My season has not begun on an auspicious note.

That just sucks, sorry to hear.
