Thanks for the assist, Rev. While all you good 16 folk may lust, truth be told, that stock has a wee bit 'o cast on for a lefty, and triggers bent for same-she is but a siren, that would leave you all heartbroken. Unless you are in your "right mind".

As the years have gone past, some things have changed. Tobin 16 gauge guns (when they turn up) don't sell for $500 anymore, and I'll bet Randy won't supply a blank like this very old English AND fit it up for $800. I finished the stock in tung oil varnish, which Brownell's used to carry. It is a glossy finish, as that is what the guns had when new. The late Russ Ruppel, on a different board, used to laugh at me for having $1500 into a Tobin, and fluer de lis checkering on same-whose laughing now?

In my experience, a Tobin needs the same attention to ammunition as a 'Flusie-low pressure loads, the frame has big hogged out areas for the roller equipped hammers and cocking rods, that don't seem to take kindly to big loads. Rather than a crack developing, the frame seems to bend just a bit, and you have an off-the-face condition. My 12 ga. "Black Diamond" Tobin was loose when I got it, and Mr. Orlen put a shim on it. Many of the old Tobins I've seen have the lever left of center and a bit of clatter 'twixt barrel and frame. The 16 was a pistol grip gun with the lever well to the right, and almost no wear. Several of the screws are a little buggered, but we don't worry about that out in the field. 100 years of service will get you some of that. Those case colors are original, and to die for!

This may have been the last set of bores Stan Baker worked on before he died. He opened the chokes from full and extra full to skeet and loose modified, lengthened the forcing cones (which, were more like steps when the gun was new) and gave the bores a mirror finish consistant in size from cone to choke. I use the Eley VIP 2 1/2" loads in it and have had wonderful results. The 12 gauge remains a 2 1/2 " gun, with full and full chokes, forcing steps, and 3 inches of drop, just the way she was built. The bores are a bit misty from the years. I'll bet Frank Major Tobin would like to know about that good looking poly finish that is on the stock, and that interesting Pachmayer pad, however...
Best,
Ted

I picked up an old Tobin today at a gunshow. Didn't know anyting about Tobin per se but I knew the gun was what I was looking for. Sweety, it is. Side locks, enough drop at comb, wreaked of "Classic." Got quite a lot into the ol' girl, but will enjoy the carry at the end of the day.
