Hello,

I see RST is still out of stock on 2-1/2" shells. My stash is getting pretty low and I need to get some, does anyone know of a seller of the old short chamber shells? I have a new-to-me Winchester Model 97 in the short chambering and I'm contemplating having the chamber lengthened to 2-3/4" just so I have more availability of shells.

Thanks,
Cliff

For reloading? Thanks Citori, but I have quite a few once fired hulls, from RST and WR Classic Game. I have a 16ga Lee Loadall but I'm not set up to reload the short chambered shells.

OK, I misunderstood, thought you wanted to reload. I would check out Poly-Wad.

If you have any luck with Polywad let us know. Based on what others have posted there have been no new Polywad 2 1/2" shells (or any other ammo) from Polywad for several years.

RST has no shells as of today. I only have 3 flats remaining and will shoot more 12 and 20 to conserve my 2 1/2" 16's. And I know of no other current source.

Here's a link to a Shotgun World thread that has a photo showing how to use a Lee Loadall II to reload 2 1/2" https://www.shotgunworld.com/threads/loading-2-5-inch-16-gauge-shells.393704/#post-3132988 You can also use 1/4" plywood, plexiglass or similar to make the "riser" for the crimp stations.

Pretty easy and cheap to set yourself up for loading 2.5” shells with the lee load all.

Buy another 16 gauge conversion head for the lee load all from titan reloading for $12 and when it comes in slowly cut down the plastic tube for the final crimp station, go slowly and test it on the hulls your trying to crimp until you get satisfactory crimp on your 2.5” hull. The. You can easily swap in this head for using with 2.5” hulls and still have your other one for 2 3/4”. While your on titan’s site pick up another powder hopper, plunger, and charge bar and you can leave it setup exactly for the load you Desire in 2.5”

Parts located here.
https://www.titanreloading.com/product-category/lee-precision-reloading-equipment/lee-service-parts/load-all-2-parts/

Way better results this way than the previous in my opinion.

Thank you very much for your detailed messages and suggestions. Huge help for reloading, thanks. Those links are really great.

Citori, if you still have the once fired polywad roll crimps, I would be interested. Let me know how many and cost.

As an addendum to this post I'm going to paste in a partial paragraph from RST. They have no 2.5" shells in stock and will most likely NOT have any in 2022, though it could change I guess. I'm probably going to follow through with my plans of having my 97's chamber lengthened to 2-3/4", since I know I can get shells for that. Here's the verbiage:

Q: What is causing the supply challenges?

A: Quite simply, our manufacturing facility has not been able to get all
components to load shells. In particular, the low pressure powder is an
issue. Additionally, military contracts began specifying powders in the last
few years for military ammunition, impacting our supply. With expanded
government regulation, shipping explosive and energetic materials has
become more challenging, which also impacts available supply. Lastly,
rapidly changing consumer preferences for different powder types has
impacted both demand and supply. We contacted all supplier providers to
help resolve open issues and expect powder supply to NOT improve in 2022.

My 2 1/2-chambered guns are getting a good cleaning and then going to the back of the safe. I have exhausted my supply of shells both for hunting and clays.

I've been on the lookout for a 2/1/2-chambered British boxlock 12 as those apparently are the best value in sxs shotguns these days. Not sure whether to put those plans on hold or perhaps pick one up at a good price at the moment since there is absolutely no ammo for them.

Sporting days: they are easy to load, if you're not set up, you could fix that problem and never have to worry again about feeding your short chamber guns.

I’ll be shooting standard 2 1/2 dram, 2 3/4 shells in my 2 1/2 guns for the foreseeable future. Maybe I’ll have the chambers lengthened at some point, but not likely as I don’t find it necessary. With Polywad and RST out, there’s no sustainable supply of 2 1/2 shells any longer. I think 2 1/2 shells are going the way of the pinfire. Unless you have lots of time to cut hulls and reload, it sounds like it’s time to move on.
