Way to go, Marc....that was a good deal, glad you got it, that guy has been very fair with me, even gone so far as to send me additional money to help fix a crack at the head of the stock of my Elsie.... I would not hesitate to buy from him again....he has good stuff at very fair prices.

Congratulations,

Duncan

Duncan,

I was pleased with the condition. No hidden surprises that I can tell. Stock has finish very similar to the older Savage 99's, so I presume it to be original, but not certain. The blue on the bbl's is excellent and the receiver is pretty grey with some evidence of rust, primarily on the underside where it was carried. Overall, a good purchase compared to anything I have seen to date. And yes, you are right about the seller. A good honest guy. Can't wait to get it out on the range and see if I can improve my bleak scores a bit.

Great, Marcus, let me know how she shoots for you....my barrels are just getting blued right now, the choke and forcing cone work is done, and the stock is having a pad put on....should have both parts back by Friday, then I can run mine thru it's paces.... they are nice light little guns, and I believe I'll load for it accordingly.... at last, gaining a little wisdom and maturity...?? Smile

Duncan,

Sounds like you're going to have a real looker as well as a great shooter. Can't wait to see the finished product.

I wonder if there would be any interest here on the forum for a very nice Nitro Special. Since acquiring the Sterly and the Elsie, there isn't much room for the Nitro. It sure would make someone a very nice shooter as well as a fine piece of history.

I had one and owned it for only a few weeks, but I still like to watch this forum because there are some really nice folks here and good issues and information abound.

How is it, you devotees of the 16, might wonder could anyone own just one 16ga and then own it for only a few weeks?

Well, here is my not so sad story. I bought a French MAC 16 ga (some may recall this shotgun). I managed to buy it broken from a friend (long story but let me sum it up by saying it happened in the course of me test firing it...it worked when my buddy put it in my hands, it didn't when I made the deal...sort of a self imposed it broke on my watch...so I'll buy it).

I sent it to Kirk Merrington (a great English trained gunsmith in Kerrville, Texas should you ever need one by the way), got it fixed for a most reasonable sum of money and thereafter I shot several much enjoyed boxes of ammunition through it.

I have a petit (5' tall 90 some pounds) 18 year old daughter who pretty much refused to shoot anything other than my Savage Stevens .410 SxS (which I gifted her for Christmas last year). She wasn't hitting much with that gun (I know, I know...a .410 isn't a good gun for a new shooter, but she really didn't seem to care much about hitting all the targets and cared more about enjoying the game...perfectly content to break 7 or so out of 25). You all know where this is going by now I suspect.

I let her shoot the new to me 16ga French SxS...her first time out with it she doubled her hits, the gun's recoil even in the light French gun was surprisingly mild and by her estimation better than the 20 ga guns she had tossed aside in the past.

Guns that find their place in a loved one's hands are never really lost to us, are they? Nonetheless, I suppose my answer to this question is...none. Although I do still have the honor of buying 16ga shells by the case!

Hadn't posted this thread yet, but now I have a new sixteen I'll pick up on saturday! Just won the auction this week on a Ithaca 37R 16ga. I got it mostly for a rainy day gun, but might make a restoration project out of it if it looks like a canidate for such an endeavor. Probably paid too much for it, but I wanted it and my birthday was this week, so I said what the heck.

I also have a Citori 525 28" field and a 311 28" M/F. The Citori Fits me great, and I have a slip on pad which makes the Stevens point good for me too. I'll let folks know what I think of the 37 when I get it this weekend.

Britgun. My favorie has allways been the A-5 standard as I've had that for almost 37 years. I'll probably be using the Sweet Sixteen more now. The Fox I restocked with a heavier stock for shooting. Here's apicture of the original stock. i finished repairing it. The side you see that whole front piece, I replaced and onthe other side only half of the front piece.[img] .[/img]

I had a feeling it was the A-5.... good job on the Fox stock, do you now shoot lighter loads in the Fox, or do you treat it like any other gun?

Britgun. I haven't used the gun myself. Had it since they first came out with the BSE. My son did all the shooting with it. I think as I've got the heavier stock on it, I'll try it withe PMC shells we all bought. I'll probably just leave it on the wall. I think the Remington SPR 310 O/U will handle any shell I put through it. But srill like the A-5's. For geese I can allways use the A-5 12 gauge magnum, but they should have built them on wheels.
