My wife gave me this book for Christmas 2020 because I told her that I wanted to try some good recipes for pheasant, sharpies and huns. After a year plus of trying some of the recipes I can say that this book has made me appreciate game birds more than ever.
The author knows what he is doing and the food is better than just good. You will need to stock up on some different spices, vinegars, etc. but well worth the effort and cost.
I do like to cook, and this book makes the cooking and eating of game birds that much more enjoyable..
There are recipes for every upland game bird in the US, plus rabbit, hare and squirrel. Does not include waterfowl.

MSM2019,
Great cook book for wild game, mine at the camp was used a lot, some how it seems to have been misplaced! Great Christmas present for me also! Looks like I need to purchase another one.
all the best,

Also as a Christmas present!
Have used it numerous times and love some of the recipes. Especially the quail.
Happy eating, Bob |

BWW,
Yes the Quail recipe was very good, however I am still not a great cook, I have to keep it simple! Our real fantastic wild game Chef got remarried and no longer cooks very much here at the Grouse Camp. Now to me this was a big time loss for our Grouse Camp. Between the deaths of our old time cooks and the remarriage of our fantastic chef, food around here is not the same. I cook ok but not like they did.
Thank the Lord I cooks great Beef Roasts and Pork and Sour Kraut really well.
all the best,
Pine Creek/Dave

Hank Shaw has a great blog for all sorts of recipes, both game & store bought, with some wild plant gathering ingredients as well. I have not bought the books yet, he has a waterfowl one & a big game book. Glad to see a favorable review on this site, I may just have to buy them now. |

Has anybody used the Hank Shaw recipe book Duck, Duck and Goose and care to comment?
My experience, albeit limited, shows that the pre-cooking management of wildfowl is more important and has perhaps a greater effect on the cooking process and edibility. The upland game birds are generally more straightforward to achieve a good outcome. |

A must have series of books. I don’t have the duck duck goose one yet but the others are wonderful. Just recently bought the fish book but haven’t tried much of that yet. |

I am scheduled for a turkey hunt in about 10 days and am told there is a very good chance that I'll get two toms. The book noted doesn't have turkeys listed. Are there any turkey recipes in it- or are there recommendations of other books/sources for wild turkey recipes? |

Have never found a real good turkey recipe that really suits me.
I have friends that use it in sausage recipe but I don't have the processing equipment to do it up right.
Any suggestions?

Great I'll be getting the recipes and hopefully a couple birds. The hunt is for 4/23-24; so I can check back with results. |

I think the book with the turkey recipes has symbols on the side of each recipe what game animals will work with it, besides what the title recipe says. |

AmericanMeet,
We will both be hunting turkeys the same days. I will be out the 22nd through the 28th.
I hope we both have some good fortune and get a bird or two. |
